Forums - Nintendo - Tesco: NX listed for £349.99

$450

Too much! 278 79.43%

Too little! 23 6.57%

Just Right!! 49 14.00%

Total:350

I do believe the leak was more of how the consumer would react to a Nintendo brand itself rather than the actual console.

And what evidence do you have for this? At this point in the timeline, it's REALLY hard to keep secrets in the semiconductor industry because so much is involved in contracts, fabs, etc. All indications are that this is a Tegra system with a mobile focus.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/nintendo-nx-release-date-rumours-news-and-specs

And then you have established markets in place where people are heavily invested in either Sony's or Microsoft's online infrastructure and ecosystems. Nintendo's market has been really tight in home consoles since the rapid decline of the Wii post-2010. How on earth would they expect to sell a system at $449 unless they were going to be in the vein of PS4 Pro / Scorpio performance AND 3rd party support?

It just doesn't make any sense.

Do you have ANY evidence that this price is accurate? Because we have TONS of examples of 'placeholder' pricing going back generations, but no evidence AFAIK that NX is going to be a powerful system that will sell for a notable premium in the face of $299 PS4s/X1S, and $399 PS4P.

I mean, maybe you mean the gimmick portion of NX will make it expensive like WiiU was? If anything, that's worse IMHO. WiiU at $199 on launch without a tablet would probably have sold much better than it did at $349. Disastrous mistake. At $449 if it's another weak console with some gimmick hardware, it's going to bomb like something we haven't seen since the 32X. At that price it needs very high performance and full support by EA/Activision/Ubisoft/etc.

Your post contradicts itself, becuase you sate it's hard to keep secrets in the semiconductor industry because of contracts, etc, but then reference the "leak" which is basically based on someone supposedly seeing a dev kit using a Tegra X1.  None of the various leaks have referenced anything to do with manufacturing or design wins.  We do know that AMD has a console design win they've yet to show.  We know ERogers stated that Link would be female and we know Eurogamer leaked that 3DS would use NVidia.  They can keep trying until they get it right I suppose.

You shouldn't take the supposed leaks thus far as fact at all.  The system is going to be very different than what has been "leaked".

What do you think now?

We still don't know price, but we now know that the leaks were seemingly VERY accurate. Tablet/mobile focus, which ties in exactly with the Tegra leaks. The dock is said not to accelerate anything, so the size of the tablet and TDP for battery size/heat means this is in no legitimate way powerful enough to be a serious multiplat contender with perhaps even PS4/OG X1, let alone PS4P/X1S.

If it's $199, it could hit. More than that, and it's nearly suicidal.

Clearly a placeholder price. It should be no more then 300 $/EUR on launch, better to see it in 200-250 range to be successful.

Bundle it with the new Mario game or Zelda for 300 and I can see it selling.

Some people might wonder why are they going to launch it in March or April? I'll tell you why... Because of tax returns. USA tax returns usually start coming in around late Feb, March and April. That is when people have the best chance to have money to splurge. I actually think it is brilliant time besides the obvious holiday launch.

$300? No way on earth. A small core of diehards would buy it, but it would fare worse than WiiU. Another issue is that given the constraints of mobile hardware, this is probably not much more powerful than a WiiU, and they promised the new Zelda would come out on the WiiU YEARS and YEARS ago. That puts them in a tough spot :

Either release Zelda on both WiiU and Switch to keep their promise : many people will just buy the WiiU version.

or

Release new Zelda only on Switch : burn people with a big lie that many bought a WiiU for in the first place.

Remember : Zelda BOTW was announced in 2013 as a 2015 WiiU release. It's now missing it's release by TWO years :( Skipping a release on the WiiU would just be a slap in the face of the loyal few who bought the U.

So 250 with a bundled game and your fine with that?  Or do you expect this thing to be 199?  If it is 199 then I highly doubt any bundle game.

Yes, I think $249 with a good bundled game can be doable, provided there's a decent launch lineup with a few other good looking titles to go for.

$199 base would also be acceptable I would think.

$249 base or $299 w/bundle would be terrible for Nintendo's chances. Each of the three companies has a certain base group of fans that will buy whatever, but it's absolutely critical to make it a hit not just with the core base, but with the general gaming public as well. Pricing at the same level as a PS4 or X1S has zero chance of succeeding, because as we can tell from sales : multiplats rule the roost.  WiiU had my favorite exclusives of the last 5 years, but it got annihilated in sales because it was neither very affordable nor had adequate 3rd party support. Even the games that came were far better on the Sony/MS systems once PS4/X1 were out (I know that's not super fair, considering they came later). The long-term nail in the WiiU's coffin was the price being stuck so high for so long, and that was due to the design being tied to the expensive tablet. It resulted in a weak console at a high price. At first glance, this seems like a repeat : weak hardware, and I'm really worried about the price.

I *WANT* to eat crow. There is a big market for a hot console at the sub-$200 price point that hasn't been met.

I think you might be right about the 250 price point. I believe the Wii was 250 price point for ages with Wii Sports. Wii U should have been 250 for 8 GB and 300 for 32 GB at launch. 3DS was priced too high at 250 at launch which they soon dropped to 199 and to 179 within a year. 250 is probably best price range for a Nintendo "home" console. Be nice to have it at 199 but I'm not seeing it.

It's been taken down, but UK retailer Tesco had NX lised for 350 pounds, or $450.  Thoughts?

That will depend on what's in the box. For that place holder, it is probably a guy in an open space behind his computer trying to make this budget, his own guess.

Placeholder price, the Switch will be $300 or less, more then that and it's DOA.
