I know, I know. But here is my "reasoning", or nonsensing if you will:
1. SONY said cartridge is the best format. Well, not really SONY but one of their ex-employees who probably doesn't have anything to do with the company anymore. Referring to cartridges he said to the WSJ: “No doubt today’s best format to physically distribute games,". I don't know what he did at SONY, could had been a janitor, but I bet he is not the only one that believed that.
2. SDD and flash memory technologies are rapidly becoming better, with much higher capacities and their prices are diving. Disk are already kind of archaic.
3. SONY is not pushing UHD Blu-ray disk tech with their new 4K enabled product, the PlayStation 4 Pro. Instead they promoted popular streaming service Netflix in its place. This makes me speculate on the possibility that SONY is no longer favoring their Blu-ray tech and might decrease support for it in the future.
4. The BD movie support is meaningless, as even Sony fans are lately saying that "it's all about the games", Nintendo style. Which bring us to the last reason:
5. Nintendo is doing it. Sony has a tendency of implementing ideas that may have been employed beforehand by Nintendo. Could be a simple coincidence, as we all know these company’s test many different technologies, the odds of favoring a similar one could be pretty high for some reason, maybe. Nintendo didn't invented cartridges anyway.
Regardless, if cartridges hit big time with the NX, I expect the PlayStation 5 to follow suit. Or maybe not.
Edit - Also HDDs are going to be completely replaced by SDDs by the time the PS5 comes out, which im expecting 2019.
