It can work but it requires a different way the game works.

As it works now it generates the world on the fly in memory and only remembers what resources you take away, likely with simple binary flags or other way to store differences. For example if you leave a spot where you carved up a resource like heridium it appears as a whole block again until you get close enough for the local differences to be aplied.

Minecraft works fundamentally different in that it stores the procedurally generated world as a whole. You can see this easily as your save game grows fast when you explore a lot. My save on the ps4 didn't grow while building and changing tons of stuff locally, after flying to the four corners my save game now has 6 world data blocks.

The version of NMS as it is now is not set up for permanent changes like adding settlements, altering terrain, introducing more wildlife etc. Ofcourse it can be made, version 2 more likely than a simple add on. It would require a world storage system locally and server wise, a lot of work.

Building and crafting was meant to be a part of the game in the first place. So id imagine they have something in place already to deal with this for when they put it back in. If they have a system in place that can save your buildings on planets then id assume that same system can be used to save colonys and other things on planets??.

True, but it was also dropped for some reason. Fallout 4 could do it, so NMS can too. I guess they ran into memory problems or simple time constraints. Maybe also performance issues as Fallout 4 tends to slow down quite a bit when you build a lot.

It's just a whole lot of work for a small team, just the UI requirements for building etc are huge. Procedural generation really is an amazing time saver, while the amount of clipping issues and force flattened terrain circles for outpost shows they're still a long way off of some system where you can reliably build things yourself. I wonder how far they got with it though. They should have enough cash now to expand the team quite a bit.

The question is will all that be single player, or will another player arriving / invited on your planet see all your work. Would be cool if it became a little big universe type game.

I wish you were wrong but I don't think you are.  This game has been killed, kicked on ground, spit on, run over, drawn and quartered, thumped with rubber bands and tbagged for good measure.

It's a shame because I like the game and it has enormous potential for updates.  I wish it had been multiplatform and there never was a flood causing need for console exclusivity.

This is what really annoys me about your posts on this subject. You try to make it look like everyones problem with the game is to do with it not being on XB1.

Lets get one thing stright here once again. That is not the reason for why people are hating on No Mans Sky.

1. Developers lied to fans right up to release.

2. Game launched in a shitty state on 2 systems.

3. Game is over priced and lacks content.

Them 3 reasons are much bigger reasons for why people are mad then the one your trying to make it look like.

I agree. Another point is that this game is coming to xbox one more than likely because people data mine the PC version and found xbox one code in it.This game isn't going to hit Minecraft levels, people are already quitting the game.

It's amazing how hard people try to defend this game and say how much it "could be" if they change it enough. That could be said for anything, it's a completely vapid and pointless statement. That's like saying Mario 1 COULD BE exactly like Mario Galaxy if they just changed it enough.

The issue is not what it could be, the issue is what the game IS and what it launched as. And why spend $60 and your time on a game when there are dozens of other games already doing what this game "could do" already, and at much lower price points.

Are people so desperate to hang onto the hype of an unfinished and lackluster game after being lied to by developers and marketers? Why not use that thing we humans are capable of called LOGIC and spend your time on things that are already accomplishing what you want from this game, instead of clinging to the hopes of what "could be" because of some marketing hype you got caught up in.

You really should avoid posting to me IMO.  You post on pure emotions.

Adding a third would have opened up the potential install base and probably increased sales quite abit because this was originally thought to be a multiplatform game before their situation changed. Edit: the game being a console exclusive, timed or otherwise benefits me in no way, so I'd rather it not be since I enjoy the game and would like it fixed and meet potential growth.

It would have been fairer to those that had anticipated it and selfishly (since i like the game) it would have maybe given a chance to fix and improve with content.

alas, i think Barney is right and it will fade away.  I hope he is wrong but I'm leaning toward agreement with him.

This is a public forum, your the one getting emotional and telling people not to reply back to you when they dont agree with you and calling people stalkers when the simple fact of the matter is.

You tried to make a false assumption (And remember its not your first time) that if this game was on XB1 it wouldnt of got the hate it got.

It would of got more hate for the simple fact that the devs would of been more strained by having to deal with an extra platform.

The game would of most likely been more broken then what it already is and you would of had an extra fan base hating on the game for being over priced, buggy, and lacking lots of content its that simple.

Im not emotional.  I told you in my opinion you should not post to me.  My post seem to upset you to weird emotional levels.

You are having trouble reading what I'm writing?

i replied to Barneys comment and my comment was related to that comment.

I disagree that the game could have turned out better if it released on Xbone right away. I would love to see a detailed insight into development of this game, similar to The Final Hours of Titanfall. Maybe Geoff can write that one, too. This is a game that screams $20 indie title but due to marketing wild expectations lofted by the creator, grew to a game with AAA prices and AAA expectations but indie support and quality. Adding a third platform to an already clearly overworked and overwhelmed dev team would have just meant more bugs, more issues, and more lies. If anything, scaling back to one platform would have been better, not adding another.

I assume this is toward me.

That isn't what I said.  What more is there to say on it then that.

I think it was always intended to be multiplat wasn't it?

Lol for a person that isnt emotional you sure seem like it. Dont be upset that you didnt get away with your false assumption and then after try twisting it into meaning something else.

Are you sure your not the dev of No Mans Sky? Sean that you?.

Also it isnt what you originally said. You originally tried to say that this game was getting most of its hate by not being on xb1.

However after being called out on this you did try to switch it to "I only meant the game would of sold better if it was on xb1 too"

And now your saying that This is now not what your saying.

Its very simple if you dont want people to reply to you dont reply to threads with false assumptions, and then if called out on them assumptions dont get all emotional telling people not to be replying to you and trying to say you meant something else etc. In other words dont try playing a victem.

Except I did not say that.  So, yeah there is that.

You are a strange person.

Its ok Sean im sure your game will be great after you fix it dont let it get you down dude, However i do think you should leave the lies out of the forums and try to become an honest person.

Does this mean I won't see you on the next post?  I think I might oddly miss your stalking.

Yes its hard to talk with someone who trys say false assumptions about how its the game not being on xbox why its getting so much hate. and then calls people stalkers and try saying that you meant something else when they call you out on this instead of debating..

so yes ill be leaving this alone now since i said what i had to

I'll miss you my stalker.  You're entertaining.

I am sorry I said pc gets bad ports and it triggered you following me.  Deep down that hurt I'm sure.  (See ? We can both assume what each are are actually  saying based on previous topics not in this forum.  Fun huh?)

Clearly now your bringing in things that has nothing to do with the discussion. by you saying "Bad Ports" shows that whatever my reply to you on that was must of really effected you in some personal way to remember that even so well.

Clearly it also shows your upset and stung and emotional about the whole thing since you just clearly dont want to drop it otherwise why would you be trying to end your comments calling people stalkers and now moving on to say how PC gets bad ports.

Anyway good luck to you since its clear my replys had such emotional impact on you to make you act in such a..manner.... its not worth even trying to debate with you.

Of course I remember.  It's impossible to forget your ramblings.
