4U will let you understand what MH is all about but Generations has an added layer of various mechanics that change up how you approach the game. Generations is harder for a newcomer to get into but a lot quicker to progress through.

Yeah, 4 is more akin to the normal and expected Monster Hunter gameplay, Generations is some of a special edition with new features. I would start off with 4 if you are planning on giving the franchise a serious go around.
