Do you have to keep it plugged in to the USB port?

I think so.  I've got an extension lead

You can use it wirelessly actually!

"With the recent 4.60 update, the DualShock 4 can now be used wirelessly;

-Under "Accessory Settings" on your PS3, locate and select "Manage Bluetooth devices". Select "Register New Device." The PS3 will begin Bluetooth scanning. Simultaneously press and hold the DualShock 4's "Share" and "PS" buttons until the controller light bar starts blinking. The controller should then appear in the PS3's list as a "Wireless Controller."

I do as well, but it is just shy of allowing me to sit comfortably on the couch to play without pulling the cable out if I get all excited. I have to sit leaning forward a bit, which gets uncomfortable after a while.
