The biggest problem being a bad hard drive.  Windows XP setup formatted my hard drive and copied the setup files to start installing XP.  It required a restart, and when I got back I got the error message "error reading disk" or "disk error", I forget. 

The only thing it could be from what I read online is a bad sector in the hard drive.  But after running things like chkdsk /mbr, trying to repair the hard drive, formatting in different ways, switching the hard drive in the BIOS from LBA to Large (don't even know what that means...), nothing.

So I bought a new hard drive last night finally, and XP installed successfully.  Now I'm just having issues installing drivers, especially the ethernet driver...so I can't seem to get online as hard as I try.

I'm guessing after another night of this I'll be back up and running though.


I think everyone just assumed you banned yourself (I know I know... its a low blow)

Welcome back to the winning team, I got a new comp and just kept XP. It irritates me that not many people are told about the pros and cons of Vista, casual buyers and the like.

My mum got a new laptop and Vista is annoying her, which really annoys me.

I changed THREE of them in a matter of months, then i decided to switch to Western Digital.

Yeah, I'm never buying a Maxtor again hehe, I've heard so many bad things.  I've heard a few problems about Western Digital, but they're a good brand.  But Seagate seems like the most reliable to me.

I just hope I can fix my old hard drive somehow...it'd be a shame to let 300 GB sit around unused.

I hate computer problems ....I lost my second harddrive recently 40gb of anime/porn gone :( Yea it was a Maxtor too now to think of it .....

Western Digital are probably my favorite brand. They're silent and reliable. Seagate are reliable, but not silent to me. They sound like a Volkswagen engine... at least the ones I've used :D

Yeah, I'll downgrade to XP next week after this test. Don't want to risk anything going wrong while I still need my computer for studying.

I just downgraded a while back; it went pretty flawlessly for me. I haven't regretted it once.
