I don't blame you for missing it, but there's more context to this. 10 year product that is obselete in 2009. AMD and Intel release amzingly fast CPU and GPU combined processors which more than double dot productions in gaming. PS3 or 360 will not last till 2017. Both are equal in graphical capabilities. He's not just saying that there will be massive technological advancements but that those technological advancements will make the consoles obsolete by next year -- not just graphically but as game platforms. The consoles are already far behind in terms of raw power, and will continue to fall behind at a fast pace, but I don't see why this gen's consoles will become obsolete any faster than last gen's, or the gen before that, etc.

While I agree that the consoles will last just as long as any other generation, Sony's 10 year plan isn't going to work this time. Without a dominant marketshare, third party developers will drop the system faster as the next Wii and NextBox are replaced in anywhere from 2-4 years. Sony isn't going to have the luxury of continuing development of a system with fabulous third party support because it's outselling all the competition combined as it did with the PS1 & 2. The Wii might have been able to take the PS2s place but it will be horribly underpowered by 2012 and people will be looking for more bang for their buck at that point, no matter how casual they are.

Well, of course. I'm as quick as anyone else to mock the "TEN YEAR PLAN" drivel some people still insist on spouting, but "PS3 DEAD IN 2009" is even more silly.

As for the Wii, I agree that the lower specs will give it a shorter life than it would otherwise have had ... I doubt it'll affect things before the next gen consoles are out but after they ARE out then its tail will probably suffer.
