The hack and slash genre isn't doing too well. The last game in the genre to sell over 2 million units was God of War: Ascension in 2013. The last game to sell over 5 million units was God of War III in 2010. This gen, there hasn't been any major success in the genre.

Hyrule Warriors and Ryse may be the biggest successes in the genre this gen, but one of them sold well due to the draw of another IP and the other one was helped by being a launch exclusive for a console, and still neither have sold over 2 million.

Many great games in the genre though, have flopped very badly. Bayonetta 2 couldn't even sell 1 million despite being a very highly rated Wii U exclusive, Wonderful 101 didn't sell well and 2013's DMC: Devil May Cry despite being a very good game sold below its 2 million sales target. Then there are various Dynasty Warriors games that sell well enough to get sequels, but don't do well compared to AAA games.

With the attention that God of War and For Honor are getting, and with one of them being a major IP in the genre, do you think that the genre can make a comeback.

From what I've seen, neither game seems to fall into the hack and slash category, so I guess my answer is no.

How? Both games seem to have hack and slash gameplay. Different from the norm, but that hardly means its not a hack and slash game.

Not hack and slash games sadly, hopefully the next Ninja Gaiden is going to be like Ninja gaiden 1 and 2

For Honor reminds me of Assassin's Creed and the new God of War seems more like TLoU than a hack and slash.

So having a kid with you makes it like TLOU. I'm waiting for when they'll show the gunplay, stealth and infected apocalyptic world.

*Slow claps*

Going by that definition  - you can say The Legend of Zelda is a hack and slash just because you can hack and slash with a blade.

Zelda has never been one though, God of War has always been one.

There will probably be even more weapons that play differently, if you've played any God of War game before.

Its just changing the core gameplay, not moving to a different genre from what I've seen.

The point of view, the way the story progresses and presents itself in contrast to the other God of War games and the fact that Kratos actually has a personality instead of being a generic angry man who just prances around attacking and destroying objects.

To say God of war PS4 is the same as the original God of war is like saying Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario are the same.

Again, that hardly makes it like TLOU. Just diverging from the norm doesn't make it like TLOU, its an own thing, or do you call Uncharted an Indiana Jones ripoff?

Gamers never stop complaining. Earlier, people on VGC complained about Kratos as a character, now they complain about him changing.

the new game is an action adventure game, hack slash would be like Ninja gaiden, Bayonetta, DMC, Dantes Inferno, and the original god of war. The gameplay is hack and slash, this game is more like soul reavers and prince of persia, action adventure.

What's this narrow definition of hack and slash games you speak of?

We'll find out soon enough
