Forums - Sony - Sony: PS4 Neo, PS4 Slim to be the last upgrade for PS4's console cycle

Thats true but old consoles don't last forever nor do the discs/cartridges. Also having the old consoles takes up space and the cables become messy. It is just way more convient to have one device that does everything rather than multiple devices that does their own thing. Plus PCs can emulate console games as well and it also can have a wide variety of controllers. Heck, emulation can also have better framerate on games that didn't have them before.

But I am not thinking that a console should be able to do all that. I just want one device so that I can trade in my old console in order to save some money for my new one! So like trade in a ps4 for ps5 which = $200 off or something.

Discs can last a lifetime

They can't... Discs can suffer from Disc Rot... Under magical conditions, sure but in real world scenarios... Nope

So Sony are still going for defined generations while MS will go for the continuous updated consoles route

MS is full of it when they talk about going generationless.  They have already stated that the Scorpio and XBO will share the same games and peripherals.  If they stay in the HW business, there will be a console after Scorpio that will have its own peripherals, and MS is not going to force devs to continue to support the XBO.  This will be a new generation, regardless of what MS wishes to call it.

I was starting to worry we woudn't get a ps5 in the same 6ish year cycle. Of course it may be fall 2020 but now theres hope;

Oww I see that... yep 2019 or 2020 seems like a good time to get a PS5

I'd guess 2019.  It would be the 25th anniversary of the PS brand and too good a PR opportunity to pass up.  I mean they could play ads that end in PS5, only the S is a backwards 2.

No problem, let's celebrate 25 years of Playstation with PS5

2019 is roughly where I wanted a ps5
2020 wouldnt be bad either
Don't see the purpose of Neo or any other updated hw

this is me though I'd actually take 2020.  I like at least a 6 year lifespan

But 2020 is 7 years... I prefer a 5 year cicle. 4 years of "yeah this s**** is cool" plus the year of "this is cool, but look at that new console they are making... HYPE". I really love all the hype and excitement around a new console launch with all the tech talk, demos, new controllers, etc... Long generations are boring. I'm now 36 years old and i want to see ps10, by your logic, i will struggle to see ps8.

don't worry they'll figure out how to at least double our lifespans soon enough through DNA modification.  And Obamacare will force them to give it all free!  Then again I make 50m for each marvel movie so I can afford it when that doesn't work.

I am Iron Man

What this means is that the Neo will become the low end modle, PS4 will be phased out, and Neo 2 will be the high end model. This cycle will repeat itself as time goes on and no more numbers will be used. Not that hard to figure out guys.

If Playstation 5 and Xbox 'Two' are backwards compatible then there are gonna be some real disappointed people on here... "DAMN IT I so wanted these machines to be next gen ARRGHHH I'm now going to have to pull out my hair in frustration!" *nerd alert*

^ you mean "Forwards compatible", not backwards compatible.

Backwards compatible is a good thing (it just means the newer system can play older systems games), which doesnt effect the newer games for the system.
