Forums - Gaming - CD/DVD v. Cartridges

I like cartridges as for collector's items. I find them easier to store because they don't require a box. However, I still remember the horrors from the SNES and N64 days, when there were no price caps. I payed $110 for Shadows of the Empire and $80 for Super Mario 64 because there was no regulation on prices. Back on SNES both Mega Man X and Spawn cost me approximately $80 each. I don't mind it being on handhelds, because their specs are ancient compared to consoles and can utilize cartridges that have dropped in price from years on the market.

Carts certainly have advantages but their disadvantages in todays market make them an unlikely medium for gaming.

Pros for Carts:
Speed - Load times are basically gone.
Durability - They tend to last longer than discs and disc drives.
Writable - Save to cart, roster updates, patches, downloadable content, etc...would all work very well on a cart.
Storage/portability - They tend to be smaller for easier storage and transport.

Cons for Carts:
Cost - They cost a lot more to manufacture than discs.
Capacity - While getting better with the advent of flash drives, disc capacity is also growing and with HD gaming, it's required.

While the pros are good, the cons hurt them greatly. If there was a means to remove those 2 hurdles, carts (as flash drives) would make a serious comeback.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.  Until they become super cheap to massproduce they're going to stay at the bottom of the food chain sadly.

I'm sick of blowing into cartridge,

its limitation in storage, the fact you can't store them like you can with CDs.

Unless they fix all that, I'm sticking with discs.

What do you see the limitation in storage being?

Cartridges were better. But Disc is slowing ebbing away for flash media. So much of it in entertainment news. I wouldnt be surprised if 2 of the 3 console company's have there games downloadable to flash drives at kiosks next gen, Like HD movies soon. Download it and put it straight intp your console or T.v Whatever. Things in next 5 years are gonna change massively.

with equal storage, cartidge cost way more to produce than DVDs/Blu-Ray, and that is the limitation.

Cost (which directly links to profit) is the ultimate goal of any developers/publisher.

kingofwale, let me highlight the problem with your post.

Your response is not what I'm asking about. You mentioned a storage issue and I'd like to know what you were talking about. In fact, by responding talking about cost, you are quite clearly dodging my question (and viper's). Now don't dodge our questions kingofwale, look back at your above post (I've highlighted it to help you) and then explain to us what you were talking about.

maybe he means carts take up more space than CD's
