Forums - PC - Help making my PC good for gaming....

I've had my current PC now for 3-4 years or so. Typically, I don't use it for gaming. My kids do somewhat for Minecraft and Roblox, both of which run decent  on my machine.

I'm considering adding some hardware to my PC to make it more capable for gaming so I can play other games on it. I don't expect to be able to make it  a super machine or anything. I just want something decent.

Can the VGChartz community help me with what GPU would work for me, along with any other necessary information as I'm not too familiar with this process? Below are some specs on my computer. Does it even make sense to try making it better?

  • Dell Inspiron 620
  • Capable of up to 8GB of RAM (Currently has 4GB
  • Windows 10 installed
  • Intel Core i3-2120 CPU @ 3.3GHz

Well the GPU is the most important component when it comes to gaming, so yeah you should definitely get one.AMD's upcoming RX480 at 1080p should be able to play everything with all graphical settings turned on for quite some time, the initial price for that card is $200 though. In case you want something cheaper, the RX460 should be able to perform decently at 1080p for about $100 probably.

You should be able to get pretty far by upgrading your graphics card. However, by the sounds of it, you're also going to need a new PSU. At worst, trying to use an underpowered PSU could break your whole computer, I've heard, so you should definitely consider getting a new one before getting a new graphics card because those things consume a lot of power.

After that, you should probably look into getting more RAM. 8 GB should be fine. 4 GB isn't enough for the newest games, but for slightly older games, it should be fine.

I wouldn't probably touch anything else. I don't know how much you can change before Windows considers it to be a new computer and requires you to buy a new license. Also, it might not even be worth the effort and money to upgrade anything else (could end up being a smarter choice to get a new PC altogether if you want to do even more upgrades).

OK. Thanks. About what I was thinking.

Looking at the listed Inspiron 620 specs I found over at engadget, I think you have a 300W PSU.

Without changing it, you're best with a card that use less than 75W, and that currently limits you to one of the GTX 950 cards that have no extra power connectors or a 750Ti.

I would update my PSU to 500w. Do you have a card suggestion based on that?

With a 500W PSU you can use almost any card on the market.

Also, and I know it's silly, measure how much space do you have for a graphics card before start looking for a graphics card. That may be a quick way to discard some cards.

All great information everyone. I'm new to this stuff so it's really helpful.

If it's your first time doing this, here's a couple of articles (and videos) explaining how to build a PC that can help you change/upgrade those parts.

Also, keep your Windows key at hand, in case Windows asks you to introduce it again after you upgrade your hardware.

I've got my RAM and power supply arriving this week. I think I'll take the plunge on the RX 470 coming out at the end of June. It looks like one has a 4GB option and the other an 8GB option. Obviously the 8GB would be more but is it necessary?
