Phantom Dust is back on for Xbox, arrives in 2017

Remake will bring 2005 cult hit into modern times, says Microsoft

A remake of Phantom Dust is coming to Xbox One and Windows 10 in 2017, Shannon Loftis of Microsoft told Geoff Keighley on YouTube's Live at E3 show tonight.

Phantom Dust was an action/strategy card game for Xbox when it launched in North America in 2005, and it will be updated for modern times, Loftis said.

"We're using the original assets from the Phantom Dust that was released by Microsoft Japan in 2003," Loftis said. "We are updating some key parts of it. We are updating it with modern Xbox Live. ... For those who haven't heard of it, this game is a collectible card game that's wrapped in an action RPG. ... The game, when it came out, was very of its time."

Phantom Dust will be part of the new Play Anywhere program where buying it for one platform entitles the user to it on the other, with progress and achievements transferrable.

A new Phantom Dust was announced for Xbox One at E3 2014, but a year later Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg said the game was no longer in active development, but not canceled outright. In an interview with Polygon at the beginning of March, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said there had been no change in Phantom Dust's development status, but it wasn't dead.
