Forums - General - What do you think happens when you die?

Life after death. I don't believe in it but it would be awesome, imo. It would be also great if we could reincarnate in a different world/dimension or something like that. Maybe a magical fantasy world. Hehe...

My wife has this horrible idea that when you die, you expire, like batteries (Not the rechargeable kind). That everything just shuts off. I tried reasoning with her that her assertion is hopelessly false because in order for nothing to exist anymore you must be aware of this so you must still be conscious.

I personally think when we die, our physical manifestation "expires", but our "spirit" still lives on, like you're stuck in your own head.

I also find it kind've odd that she still lingers on these thoughts, and has so for many years. I got over the "What if I didn't exist" train of thought when I was around 8-10.

So what do some of you guys think happens when we kick the bucket?
Are you sure you're not misinterpreting your wife's views?  If you "expire" completely, you're not experiencing nothingness, you are experiencing nothing because your consciousness does not exist any longer.  (You would not be conscious any more than a rock is.)

As for me, I'm with lolita.  Life after death. I don't believe in it but it would be awesome, imo.  I really hope there is an afterlife ... but I'm not expecting it.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

It's odd thinking about what happens to your conscious. I think it's one of the only things I can't fathom/imagine.

Yes. That seems to be at the crux of the matter. Many people have the belief that "you" is your consciousness. It's impossible to speak those things which cannot be spoken and it's impossible to think those things that cannot be thought.

The question "What happens when you die?" will inevitably end up being an equation/position/belief that revolves around what the definition of "you" is. Which is to say, it's a matter of personal identity.

When I die, my head will explode and confetti will come out. My body will be used as a pinata and all the good candies, like Mr. Goodbar, Snickers, and Milky Ways come out as well as Jelly beans, except for Licorice flavor. I think sour patch kids would be included as well and gummy bears!

anyways ... i think Fkusumot gave a pretty good response .... in the end ... it depends on who do you think you are ... what's your identity

Yes, but try and describe a loss of conscious.

When you lose consciousness, the next thing you will know is waking up and regaining consciousness. So if there is no consciousness at the end, what did being unconscious feel like? But in fact there would be no unconsciousness, because there is no conscious!

Well, Emerson said something like the privation of an attribute isn't its opposite. I believe he was using the example of "good". The privation of the characteristic of "good" from an action doesn't make the action "bad/evil". So you could just as well apply that to the privation of consciousness and your paradox disappears.

I gave the link a brief reading. I liked it, but [never mind, I was overlooking something].

It can't be that bad WB. Before I was born I experienced it for who knows how many billions of years, and it didn't seem to effect me that much.
