Forums - Sony - Why Is Sony Launching Its Own Music Service?

While sites like Amazon pull out the big guns in attempt to loosen Apple 's stranglehold on online music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment is opting to cut out the middleman--a strategy that has in the past been met with limited success.

The major-label home for artists such as Alicia Keys and Celine Dion is in the process of developing an all-you-can-eat music subscription service, set to be compatible with a number of music players including, possibly, the Apple iPod .

Speaking with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, Sony BMG CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holtz suggested a flat rate of $9 to $12 a month for subscriptions, adding that the company might go so far as to let users hold onto certain selections after their subscriptions have lapsed.

Schmidt-Holtz also mentioned the possibility that other music publishers might come on board. While the idea of a music subscription service with rollover songs and iPod compatibility is certainly appealing, it's hard to imagine too many users would possess enough of an alliance to a major like Sony that they'd to choose the company's service over a provider such as Rhapsody or Napster.

9.99 per month is a pretty sweet price for all-you-can-eat.

But I bet their will put DRM in it so as soon as you quit the service, all your music will render useless.

Still, If you download over 10 songs a month, it will be worth it... Well, you will have to like songs they offer, of course.

Seems really half ass. Without having other labels on-board, it seems completely pointless.

Considering that there have been rumors that Apple is attempting to come up with an unlimited download scheme for the ipod (pay a flat fee when you buy the ipod/iphone, and get unlimited downloads off of itunes for as long as you own the device), this seems pretty half assed to me. According to the stories I've read, you will probably also get to keep any songs you download even if you get rid of the ipod.

Of course, that just means apple drm, but who care really since you have to buy an ipod to even get the service in the first place.

Here's a link to the story (in case anyone hasn't seen it)

Because Sony is one of the top players in the music industry. Hello gaming isn't the only thing they do haha.

still wont be as successful as itunes, but i read earlier today what this offers more than itunes is that when u download files from sony's service you can use it on ANY mp3, where as in itunes u have to use them on an ipod.

i dont know if u can actually do that with itunes, can you?
