Forums - Microsoft - MS cracks down on Gamerscore cheaters

I don't fully understand the obsession with achievements and gamescore. Do people actually care that much about them that they have to cheat to get them? Do other people care if you cheated to get a higher gamerscore?
i will never get it either......it seems the onl pople that care are the ones that have the huge amount.. i mean i have seen a guy wil a game score of 60 provide a big dose of pwngeto guys with 400 and 500 times higher scores

I AM FURIOUS!!! This is so stupid!!! First off gamerscores are only a personal thing, it's not like they are giving out money to those with high scores, plus they're cheap within themselves, I've unlocked 350 achievements by playing Scene It? for 2 hours. It took me 20 hours to do the same in most other games.

But here is my big problem, alot of casual gamers suck at games, they spend 60 bucks on games, and if they get stuck they are basically told, "too bad." and if you cheat to get your monies worth, you'll be punished. That's stupid.

Personally I downloaded a game save for burnout Revenge, because I hate the races and only play Burnout for the Crash mode, so I couldn't unlock any more crash boards until I beat more races, I said that's stupid! So I downloaded the game save and enjoyed the rest of the crash boards, and hence got my 60 bucks worth. Now they are telling me, a guy who has bought a 360 pro, 2 years of gold live and 17 games that they are going to insult me by pulling this crap!

Seriously I hated microsoft for all their pc crap, but I was turning over a new leaf with them with the 360, and now that they are losing sales and worried about blu-ray and ps3 sales they are going to start their pc bullying? I"m seriously pissed and I can honestly say since I own all threee systems that when a multiplatform game comes out I won't be buying the the 360 version, not when they are going to bully me when I'm paying for an online account. And seriously they are a pc company that makes an interenet browser, but there system doesn't have a browser, doesn't support game mods, doesn't support pc memory devices(like an SD card) or 3rd party wifi devices, their console is so anti-pc I'm now really pissed off with them.

One more thing, how dare they put my name up or anyone elses(to see what I did read my earlier post) on a list of "cheaters" for everyone to see. Other then an artificially high gamer score, I don't cheat. game save downloading doesn't mean you're running around halo 3 multiplayer in god mode, we're just like everyone else online, so why would they give the false impression that we're cheating online? Especially when they are taking away from us the only advantage we supposedly got, which would be achievements.

good to see ms doing something

Couldn't MS be sued for libel if they list someone as a cheater ?

They can't be sued for libel over this. Anyway this is great and the Xbot whining cause he can't unlock games, you can't justify cheating just because you suck at a game.

It's only libel if it's untrue.  If you cheat the system then you are a cheater.

I think it's good thing.  And if you don't like playing in fair environment then by all mean go to other on-line service like PC (where there are plenty of cheaters and thus totally wreck that environment) or PSN where you don't have to pay.  My feeling is if you are willing to cheat just to boost your gamerscore then you are willing to do a lot more to win so I have no problem if you cheaters move on to other platform.

And yes MS can do this because Live is their system. You are just a subscriber to the service.

If you are good in gaming, that's not the same as cheating. Also downloading a savefile isn't cheating... Cheating online or for a good gamerscore is pathetic. Maybe you're not playing the good game, if you're not good at it. Well then try another game. Or rent... Cheaters should be punished for their actions, so I like the initiative by MS. But tbh, at some points this policy is somehow unclear, so they might explain something. I'd say that this policy goes for online cheating and not offline, but that's not clear.

Cheating implies playing with an advantage not intended by the developer. Downloading a game save to skip a level, is like skiping a chapter of a dvd we don't like, or speed reading past a boring page in a book, I'm not playing with weapons I shouldn't have yet, or a god mode. And game saves are not affecting anyones online experience.

If your principles are so high and mighty that you wouldn't dare skip a level by cheating, that's great for you, but now we are going to impose these principles on everyone?

Secondly this is not good for business, people downloading games saves aren't people stealing games, they are spending healthy amount of money on this industry, they are also people with disposable income as they have pissed money away on devices to hook up their harddrive or memory devices to their pcs. So Microsoft is pissing off good customers. And seriously who's not buying Microsoft games because a few other people out there are cheating? No one. So as Microsoft falls to third place in the console race, in arguably Sony's biggest year, Microsoft's strategy is to spend money on policing the only gaming community that has to pay subscription fees.

Wtf. Gamerscore means nothing to me. When I see a high score I think "that guy has been playing 360 games more/longer than I have." I don't automatically think he's a better gamer. I like unlocking achievements, but the only person you cheat it yourself. If you get 150pts for beating Game X on expert level, and you didn't, what does that random number on your Gamertag mean to you?
