The poll is interesting, Even if 20 % of existing owner's buy in that's well worth Sony investing in. Plus it may peak interest in people thinking of going 4k in the living room in the same way that the ps2 and Dvd boosted each other. This done right may send the ps4 over the 150m and become number 1 selling console of all time, especially since the ps5 would be pushed back.

The poll is among hardcore gamers though, plus how many will actually go through with it if it doesn't make a real noticeable difference. 4K gaming is not going to happen, 30->60 fps doubtful, locked frame rate is more likely if the console remains affordable.

For a real difference the price has to go up. Next to the fact that selling the console to a previous owner at cost doesn't make Sony any money. They already have you as a customer. Thus less room to subsidize the console by PSN subscriptions and game sales. How many will go through with it if there is no trade in program and the new console is $500 or $600.

Of course those that upgrade can sell their current ps4, which is still good for Sony, more users. Yet not so good for the slim version that's there to make a profit to fund the next transition.

Gamers don't have an infinite budget either, spend $400 on a console upgrade likely means $400 less to spend on games.

We could be looking at the XB360 Kinect effect, which did extend the life of that platform back in 2010.

Seeing as how most ultimately see Kinect as a flop, game/pay off wise in retrospect, it's easy to overlook how successful it was commercially in terms of unit sales.

But the duration of that effect for the PS4 and PS VR will depend upon real world pay offs in terms of entertainment value and meeting expectations. At worst, we're looking at a wearable TV/headset that will give some consumers headaches and others will find too uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

At best, if it hits its stride within two years with more incentive to adopt in that environment, SCE may well want to milk the PS4K for as long as they can.

The only thing to keep in mind is it's doubtful MS will be doing the same and would likely wish to replace the XBO as soon as they are able to release a new platform that is compelling enough to push upgrades and early adoption.

Then again, we may well be looking at the end of the line for the Xbox as a console with the XBO. With the Win 10 overlap, it's increasingly looking like the only real incentive for buying an Xbox is because it's cheaper and simpler than a dedicated gaming PC.

I just don't see SCE doing a trade in program. Current PS4 owner trade in program will likely consist of going to GameStop, etc. for $100-200 off a PS4K.

Besides, I'm not sure I see SCE pushing for all PS4 owners to upgrade in the first place. I'm pretty confident that all PS4 software will run on existing PS4s for the duration of the product life cycle. They don't want a split market on an already successful platform.

I could see them phasing current PS4 production out eventually, once it becomes cost prohibitive to keep two factory production lines running, but even then, there will still be a good 40-50m PS4s in circulation to support.

True, but that all leads to a lower sales forecast of ps4k, or at least slower adoption, which means either a higher price or less room for substantial upgrades, which in turns lowers the potential sales.

It's not the same as Kinect which pulled in new customers. Maybe PSVR can pull in a new crowd too, yet requiring a more powerful ps4k would only disrupt that. Kinect sold with a 4gb arcade model to make it more attractive, quite the opposite. My best guess is simply a 4K video compatible ps4 with dedicated VR port that can be bundled with the headset without need of the extra box. Perhaps some extra power in there if it's the same price anyway and can be used for h.265, Dolby Atmos, VR menu enhancements etc. Yet there won't be an overhaul of the GPU with double the tflops as some are hoping for.

PS4 owner, will get rid of it if it happens
Vita has me covered

If it's out by the time I decide to get a PS4, then maybe, but unlikely. I wont be getting a 4k TV anytime soon, so I probably wont find the higher cost worth it unless it's only $50-$100 more than the original.

No, waste of money

This is where it gets sort of interesting.

Depending upon how SCE places the PS4K, they may well keep the PS4 as a separate, lower priced SKU. It seems a bit counterintuitive to keep production going on the PS4 with its current specs, even with the imminent redesigned "slim" model with a lower BoM undoubtedly in the works.

If there is no imminent $299 MSRP SKU "slim" for 2016, then we may be looking at the replacement SKU in the form of the PS4K, only without the typical $50-100 price drop. This would allow SCE to end production on the current PS4 line and run a single production line with a single hardware product.

The downside on this hypothetical scenario is that the PS4K would have to be a $399 MSRP SKU, meaning the hardware spec upgrades will be more of a 2016 OEM build update rather than the Super PS4 some are expecting.

It would seem like an omission if SCE didn't offer a PS VR bundle package, but that would mean a $900 SKU, which I have a hard time imagining on shelves.

Alternately, we could be looking at a $500-600 PS4K if SCE went more aggressive with the updated specs, which I equally have a hard time imagining, because now we're looking at a $1000 SKU.

At this point, without knowing hardware specs, BoMs, etc. it's all speculation anyway.

For now i rather wait to see what the NX is.

But i will buy a PS4 eventually i believe (FF15, FF7R, Persona 5, Nino Kuni 2, etc). I might get a PS4k, but if the price from the original drops, than maybe i just get that one instead.
