This would be the dumbest move in PlayStation history if Sony actually does this.

It is such a horrific idea it's not even funny.

There are now rumors/speculation of Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo all allowing upgradable hardware. Do you think it would be dumb if all 3 go this route?

If you can upgrade existing ps4.. then this is perfect.. if not.. not so good.. (atleast not for the people having a ps4 now)

Ontopic: this is old news..

It's also strange that this only mentions an upgraded GPU. You'd need more than just a GPU upgrade to hit 4K, PS4 CPU is kind of on the weak side. Pretty sure you'd need at least 4 more GB of RAM as well.

Isn't the RAM inside the GPU?

No, the RAM are seperate chips on the motherboard. However the CPU and GPU are combined into one APU chip.

The fact that they said it will do 4k lets me know this isn't real.

Why would they piss off developers?

I don't think having an optional, far more power SKU of the same/similar architecture will be much work on their behalf. Especially if resolution is the main use of that added power.

Because developers will likely have to pay for new and improve dev kits that run at this higher spec. Because developers will now literally have to do twice the testing. Because developers will have to make enhancements to the game to run at both specs.

It's more time, effort, and expense for developers to have to handle this. It's the main reason why there is only one game that is New 3DS exclusive, and that games was made by Nintendo themselves.

And its completely optional. I'm sure EA and Activision aren't worried about purchasing some extra dev kits, if they do not want to utilise the added power they don't have to (just like the 3DS and DSi). This is no different from the PC environment except its easier in that their is a given base to work from (OG PS4) and they can just test higher bench marks on the PS4k. I really don't think we should speak on what developers actually want unless you work for a AAA studio?

Don't really believe it. Even now it would be too expensive, and not enough people own 4K TVs to warrant it

Guys, guys, guys.....
Slow wayyyyyy down.

First of all I think the 4K is a misunderstanding, I am sure they just mean UHD. That isn't full 4k but beyond 1080p.

Second, of course there would be a trade-in scheme for at least 6 months where you can get the upgrade for between 150 to 200 euro. depending on the final spec.

Third..... so it's ok to upgrade your phone every year or two but 3-4 years is too soon for a console upgrade.

Fourth: I expect this PS4.5 to release just before the 5 year mark, they were saying this gen would only last 5 years anyway so.... what's the problem?

Fifth: This means PSVR will not be obsolete the minute they transition hardware. That is reassuring for buyers of the platform.

Sixth: PS4 owners wont be left too far behind, they will not be left without the capability to play the latest titles (just at 30fps etc)

I would be so pissed if this happened tbh unless they offered to upgrate my ps4 for like max 50 dollars and I wouldn't have to do it myself.

It's the same reason why I don't buy the latest smarthphone but at least I know there will be new and better hardware in 6 months or so with a cellphone. I expect my PS console to not be arguably obsolete for at least 3-4 years after I but it for the original price.

That depends. The most reasonable and cost-effiecient way to boost PS4 would be to add a 2nd exact duplicate of the PS4 GPU, allowing it to run in crossfire with the current GPU, and the PS4 GPOU lacks dedictaed RAM, it uses a shared pool of RAM with the rest of the system.

However, it's possible they could add even more powerful GPU that has dedicated RAM, and run it in asynchronous compute with the original GPU, but not all games support asynchronous compute yet, in fact very few support that feature so far.

Oh yeah, I remember sony boasting of the the unified RAM earlier.
