This manga is really good, though it's quite bittersweet. I suppose it's kind of a cross between a coming-of-age and a slice-of-life story with a good dash of cooking-manga.
It's titled Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san. It's about two close friends, Kiyo and Suu, who have dreamed of becoming Maiko (sort of like Geisha in Kyoto who dance or play during performances and feasts). It's a very strict and traditional lifestyle. Suu is thin and graceful but she is also very dedicated and her potential for becoming a special Maiko is spotted instantly. Kiyo, on the other hand, has no talent at being a Maiko at all. It's not long before she is told that her dream is over. However, at that time, the cook at the dorm where the apprentice Maiko live is unable to work and Kiyo steps in to save the day. Even though she can't be a Maiko, she is extremely hard-working and good-natured and an excellent cook. She is hired to handle kitchen duties. Thus the two stay together, though on very different paths.

It's funny. I looked at the first 3 sentences, then I looked at the first panel with girl on the guy's shoulder and thought that's what you were referring to. I decided that didn't make sense and scrolled down to see the next panel XD. Anyway, I finally got around to reading the first 5 chapters and so far I am loving it. The artsyle is very great mix of part cutesy, part bold, and feels like remade version of fuedal Japan's art. There's also great contrast to its artstlye. I don't want to read too far so I'll try to read a chapter weekly, but I really the dynamics of the story and its interpretation of folkore so far. |
Ha, I didn't even think about that, I just posted a good picture from near where I was at in the manga. I guess that would be confusing (and kind of amusing).
I also like how stylized the art is, it really stands out for an "alternate past" type story. The story gets really twisted, too, and jumps the tracks of expectations. I like that it's not predictable. It's serious and violent but it's also funny and cute. It's a samurai story with a lot of politics but it also has crazy powers and mythical characters.

I've been enjoying this greatly as well.
