Forums - Sony - The dream? PS4 Slim plus PS VR this October?

Normally PS systems get slimmer and a hefty price cut around this time in their lifetime leading to the classic 3rd full year peak.

So when will PS4 actually get its slim if at all? It seems like a pretty slim system already.

Would it be a good idea to release it around the same time as PS VR?

If a $250 PS4 was possible this holiday, and maybe a small deal on PS VR. Could be looking at ~$600.

Imo PS4 slim + GTAVI would be some insane sales, so it might be worth waiting for that.

don't think until at least end of 2017 depend on how good PSVR sale is...

PS4 Slim will come whenever AMD shrinks their APU. So don't expect anything before the end of 2017.

The PS4 was launched with a 28nm APU and with 16 512MB GDDR5 modules (8 one either side of the board).

It still has a 28nm APU but is now using just 8 1GB GDDR5 modules (all on one side of tho board).

A PS4 slim will not come to market till the APU is on a 14/16nm fabrication process. And at that time Sony will probably go back to the clam memory design of the original board and have 4 modules on either side to further save space. They may take out the slot loading drive too and instead switch to a direct loading drive bay system.

The slim will probably be coming in at a $199 price point and all this will probably happen around the fall of 2017.

Don't expect to see the PSVr headset price drop anytime soon.

I like toploading disc trays, and Im all for them useing that if its cheaper and takes up less space.

Im hopeing the Slim version comes in 2016...

It's not necessary at all yet. Sales have seen steady year over year growth, the og ps4 is already very well designed and there's a lot of other things they need to continue focusing on that are more important. It'd be a major strategical waste to launch this year. 2017 sounds like the sweet spot

The next time that Sony drop the price will be another 50 dollars. PS4 sells very well with the actual price point. Sony will never cut 100 dollars or more, even with eventual slim model.

there already were rumors that development of a 20nm version was being completed in 2015 and seeing how both MS and Sony are highly interested in that shrink I think there's a good chance it's true

14/16nm process production is filled with high-margin chips, so I think going to 20nm first is a good decision (if it actually lowers the cost - 20nm GPUs never made it to the market because the process had low yields > didn't decrease production costs per chip at that time)

but the Taiwan earthquake affected TSMC quite a bit and production is reportedly delayed on many fronts, so 2017 is a safer bet for a slim version anyway

PS4 Slim - $300
PSVR complete bundle including a PS Camera and 2 Move controllers - $450
PS4 Slim + PSVR complete bundle - $700
That'd be nice.

AMD is going 14nm FinFET in Q2 for GPUs, question is if millions of 14nm PS4 APUs can be ready by Q4 holiday season.

I think Sony might introduce it in E3 or Gamescom 2017 and only lower the price to $299 this year. PS4 is still selling well. I expect the PS4 Slim with a $199 price tag, in the size of a 300 page book, thing is going to be really small if they also make the PSU external like the first PS2 slims.
