Forums - Gaming - PS VR is selling accessories...Why?

is the camera even needed for the basic Cinema Mode?

it's needed for translational/positional tracking and to eliminate drift in rotational tracking

I've used some VR cinema apps on my phone (cardboard) and that works quite well with only rotational tracking, but drift certainly can get annoying, so I think Sony will make it mandatory for every PSVR use, even if theoretically it could work (less well) without the cam

what is the resolution of this thing?

Switch!!!

the PS cam has 2 1280x800 cameras

for PSVR/Move tracking it will probably use a lower resolution and higher speed/picture frequency (it supports 1280x800/60Hz , 640x400/120Hz and 320x192/240Hz)

I just don't understand one thing

If the PSVR is supposed to "replace" your typical flat TV, why is the PS camera needed?

Because without the camera, you can't move around.  Which is the entire point of VR.

I know, but my question was about the cinematic mode for PS4 games

But we don't yet know what the cinematic mode will do or require.

Is it just going to be a really big screen that you're always looking at?  (Which wouldn't need the camera)

Or, is it going to be a screen of some sort that doesn't follow your eyes?

Something like this is would require the camera.

if it's like the phone apps it's probably a screen floating in place (not centered in your view at all times) with darkness all around (makes sense, because that doesn't need any additional processing power > all games work without a problem)

because you are asking the wrong question.  no one is buying psvr to replace their flat tv.  they are buying it to experience psvr and vr requires positional tracking.

you question is like asking why does the ps4 require a controller when you could just use a media remote to watch netflix.   i love the fact netflix is on my ps4 but it is not the reason anyone bought a ps4.  a ps4 is for games and psvr is for vr.

... because people are gullible

I find it rather amusing. At the PS4 launch, there were loads of Playstation fanboys decrying the all the 'gimmicks' Xbox and Nintendo were foisting upon the industry and that's what made PS4 superior. Now there are diehard PS fans buying out all the 'gimmicky' hardware in droves.

I wouldn't object to a thread on this matter, but let's try to avoid any more posts like this.

Sure thing. I'm not trying to put anyone in particular on this forum down, but rather highlight the irony in the shift of trends.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
