Forums - Gaming - IGN : Ratchet & Clanks is a Pixar dream

This reboot feels like the closest thing to a playable Pixar adventure set in space.

Insomniac’s animation and storytelling chops have always felt solid, but the performance bump from PS4’s hardware is evident at a glance. From Captain Quark’s hilariously one-sided narration to a Galactic Ranger tryout session that has crowds of cheering fans floating in the distance, the high fidelity cutscenes and equally impressive gameplay engine look almost indistinguishable. Whether I was using the hydropack to swim, swatting down minions with the handy Omniwrench 8000, or jumping across gaps using Clank’s familiar Helipack, I couldn’t help but notice tiny nuances in each of the animations.

Some other previews :

Those visuals are the main draw, too, since playing the new Ratchet is a very familiar experience. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the combination of third-person platforming and frantic shooting has always made the series a lot of fun. As does the focus on crazy new gadgets: within an hour of playing I was flying around using a helicopter add-on for Clank, while Ratchet fended off lizard creatures using a space-age flamethrower.

The game also includes some brand new additions — most notably a grenade that turns bad guys into pixelated 8-bit explosions — though I wasn’t able to play with any of them in the demo. Really, the new Ratchet plays exactly how a new Ratchet should: it’s fast and loose, and just challenging enough to make blowing up robots really satisfying.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that this game is a fast and simple game churned out to reinforce the film and launch in time for the premiere, like so many others have done before. Nor is this a remaster or a cheap remake of the first instalment. From what we've been playing, it will be a rounded and fully fledged R&C, with modern mechanics and graphics, all packaged up with all the charisma and appeal you'd expect from a game in 2016.

What impressed us the most during the two hours we played were the levels themselves, which look beauty and appear to boast variety. Equally we appreciated how well you can move and control the characters. If you play the PS2 original, you'll notice that the difference is almost embarrassing. These new controls are smooth and accurate - faster, more accessible - and the visuals are bright and breathtaking.

Very excited for this game! This has been, and is going to continue to be such a great year...

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Is it 60 fps? If so I am very hyped.

30. Insomniac stopped going for 60 with their current engine since most of their games are moderately-budgeted. I do believe it's native 1080 though.

My only concern, which I didn't state in the other thread, is that it might end up being short-ish after all. The previews I've seen blow through the planets in about 10 minutes each. While that's obviously a fast version (and it lines up if you speed through the original game) the fact that we've seen only the first half of the first game's levels is a bit disconcerting. I don't think they'd up and cut out a bunch of levels from the second half but then a bunch of levels from the second half were sort of pointless in the first game anyway. The whole style of Ratchet the last six years has been to focus less on different planets with  many different aesthetics and more on making each planet more worth designing.

If they do have 14/18 levels from the original or some new ones to supplement it I should have no worries but something about the price tag has me just a little weary even though all accounts have said it's a full game being discounted to get more sales. Other than that the game looks absolutely phenomenal. Well, besides the in-game lip synching at some points - that looks janky as hell.
