Loved the first one to death. It felt so innovative. Everything you did felt meaningful and it was the closest to Yojimbo that I've encountered in a game. The second was good, too, for it's time.
I really hate how you can knock opponents way up in the air now, though. I think it might have started with 2 but I'm pretty sure it wasn't in the first one, which tried to be kind of realistic. Makes it look like a Musou game.
