Microsoft’s engineers are working to tie its game console and the PC closer together, promoting technology that allows users of the Xbox Live multiplayer gaming service to compete against counterparts on the PC.

“Historically, gamers stay in their own lanes,” said Lewis Ward, who tracks the industry for researcher IDC. “Microsoft wants to prove to the developer community that this is actually a much bigger ecosystem (by) crossing from the living room into the PC.”

The technology to back up Microsoft’s ambitions isn’t ready yet.

Major games featuring PC-to-Xbox interplay haven’t arrived as finished products. A separate project to link Microsoft’s PC-focused Windows store with the selection of games and applications available on Xbox has not been completed.

They say this like it wasn't already a thing between PS3 and PC back in the 7th gen, and that the indie game Rocket League does this, and Street Fighter V.  Why is it so hard for MS to have it's own platforms interact in this way?

Also a F2P cut down version of Forza and other games? Interesting approach. Will PC gamers get enough of a fix of these games, or will they feel compelled to buy the console for the full experience.  But that doesn't really gel with a commitment to gaming on PC. It's still about driving the Xbox console and just using PC as a marketing tool.

I don't really see it as much of a commitment to PC gamers, more or less a commitment to those who use their OS or specifically their one OS and their one store, not previously existing OS's or people buying from other vendors who happen to sell games they once owned. As far as I can see MS just wants to turn 10 into another version of Xbox in terms of one place to buy (no other choices, no other vendors or clients), no ability to mod said games (files aren't modifiable in any way) and really just a lacking choice of a massive library that other clients and vendors offer, can't say I;m interested in their current plans though as they are going down a path I do not wish to follow, about a year and a half ago I was looking forward to seeing what they had in mind but that path has shifted since then.

Also going by the poll options, lets really not try turning this into a consoles VS PC article, we could really do without that happening again.

About the new strategy, the writing was on the wall.  At some point Phil made it clear that he wasing trying to pass the PS4.  His goal was to make the gaming business as profitable as possible so that Xbox could go on.  He said something to the effect of:  I can make any promises if I can't prove that the gaming division can be profitable.  I don't know how Live membership plays into this on PC (if at all) but of all publishers, Microsoft has been the most unsupportable in years past of gaming on PC.  The controlled enviorment factor plays a big part, but isn't it weird that everyone seems shocked about Microsoft supporting its own operating system (and yes that a singular operating system).  It will be interesting to see how folks react tomorrow when the full list of games comes out.

Oh, so the Windows Event had a Embargo until 1 of March ?, i thought that they did not announced nothing interesting, because of that this site had no News about the event.

Ultimately, Spencer says, Microsoft’s goal is to meet gamers on any device, enabling them to pause a game they were playing on an Xbox and pick up where they left off on a laptop, or, eventually, even more mobile devices.

Yes, there was an embargo.  The event was billed as a Xbox Win 10 event.  The event was held las week, and the media wasn't permitted to report on it until Tuesday... Not sure why exactlly tomorrow but thats what happened.

In the years they didn't support windows 7-8 we had other clients and vendors with a minute few of their own titles (even Valve's exclusives are playable on Mac, Linux, Windows 7-10 and even Steam OS, one store supporting multiple OS users and even the library on that client dwarfs their own work by a ton) and it seemed like a good time because it meant we had plenty of stores and choices to go for. With MS coming back it's simply being forced into a closed environment with their OS, no ability to mod, only buying from one store for a few titles owned by them (even owned by them I can funnily enough buy quote a lot of MS related games not on their store but multiple vendors and Steam, so it's hardly like they were always exclusive just to MS, back when MS was technically more open but not dominant) and with DX 12 you'll eventually have to buy specific hw to "cope" with the "raw power" that DX is touted to offer (yet these recent windows 10 only games actually require way more hw than most AAA games and these are at the end of the day console ports and not built only specifically for PC in mind at all which also debunks DX 12's supposed power usage into play) along with it only working with W10 console port titles. Vulkan is supporting other OS's, other games not owned by MS and even supports Windows 7-10.

I get what MS is going for but about a year and a half ago we heard that they wanted to "re-commit" to PC gaming, not commit to it in their own way as to go "hey we left you for someone we thought was better but we kinda own you so we'll do what we like by force, so yeah accept it". I honestly don't think they've learned much from the last time they tried their hand at PC gaming, this time it;s just them wanting to mold their console onto PC and call it Xbox, not PC gaming because what they have planned and mapped out isn't really what PC gaming is about.

At the end of the day they can talk about what they are supporting but all I see is them wanting their cake and eating it. I don't see them wanting to co-exist with an open platform and more of wanting it to be all run by them, I mean if someone else goes out of their way to make a game or API run acorss mutliple OS's, why are we to praise them less than one who desires a walled garden and complete control with all competition forced outside their realm?. The way I see VUlkan, it looks to be a lot better from an open pov since it;s going to support multiple OS's, DX only supports one, Wind 10 store is Windows 10 only, Steam is on multiple OS's. It's clear MS doesn't want to be an exact copy of Steam but they also don't look like they will be better than Steam in every single way and that's the most disappointing part. I wanted them to come back and be fully "sorry we fucked you guys up for years, we want to make things good between us again, we want to fully co-operate with you guys", instead there is no such co-operation, there is only "use our OS and store of get out". YOu coudlt toally use the Steam argument but at the end of the day Steam still supports more than MS ever will.

feel sad about the XBox brand, which exclusives aren't going to be ported to PC?
better to build a PC and sell my XBox. Just bought it a week ago.

Did you really just buy an Xbox One?  Not trying to doubt you but you never know these days on the interwebs.

I Think that the 1 Week embargo, was to prepare some Show with the Press, to prepare a Better Marketing, and we don't know how much will be able to show, maybe is like 50% of the news will be released tomorrow, and people will think that is 100%, so they will release the last part, after the E3.

In short, no they don't want to have to coexist on an open platform... even if they own that open platform... but hey. The thing that fasinates me the most is how they will handle online gameplay.  So can you play Forza on the Xbox Live network... for free against paying Xbox gamers?  Looking at the business model they aretrying to adopt... with this title apparently free to Play... will the transactions take the place of charging for live.

A few points though:

"yet these recent windows 10 only games actually require way more hw than most AAA games and these are at the end of the day console ports and not built only specifically for PC in mind at all which also debunks DX 12's supposed power usage into play"

I don't think these games are 'real' DX12 games though but I was certainly thinking the same thing.

"I honestly don't think they've learned much from the last time they tried their hand at PC gaming"

I have to disagree there.  Look at what I said about the F2P model.  Now, I'm not saying that its a good thing for gamers at all, but I see that their strategy has really changed.

Finally I will add that I think the DX12 push (with Vulkan poised to dethrown it) and the shift to PC 'support are all related. '
