Instead of innovating they are simply playing down the business they are supposed to be investing in. Ipod anyone?? With the exception of Playstation, Sony have pretty much let the rest of the business down. This cannot be sustainable in the long run. With personal computing devices gone, what next might someone ask? tv's, phones etc.. Playstation won’t be enough to turn the tide I would think. The company needs to start innovating again like Apple, Google, Microsoft, LG and Samsung or it will spell the ultimate end for them. The attitude needs to turn around very quickly. |
Actually it's the opposite. Sony's problem in the past 20 years or so has been investing too much in playing "follow the leader". They haven't been behind anything really substantive other than assisting with BluRay and helping push the HD tv movement.
Sony's innovations have actually cost them more than anything. Remember UMD? Ultra Mini-disc? The minidisc format was assumed to become the new replacement to cds. But Apple brought in hard drive based storage through mp3s and totally destroyed the entire investment.
Sony's problem isn't that they don't innovate. Sony's problem is that they see trends moving in a direction counter to what happens in reality.
You see, it was the OLD Sony that would have come out with the "apple watch" first, or the google glass, or the "kinect".
In fact, they had smartwatches in development as early as 2013, when the first one was ever unveiled. My point is, they innovate into things people don't actually want. What Sony, NEEDS to do, is find truly groundbreaking ideas. Instead of investing in a tech because it's different, they should be investing in what makes a product successful. Remember, they had the eyetoy before the wii and before kinect, and they didn't know what to do with it. They made it simply because it was different, not because they believed in it.

I ****ing hate smartphones. |
It's funny you mention that because just the other day I was serving a customer in his late 60's and how he got to talking of trying to get into using his mobile phone and PC better than how he can currently. He mentioned how he uses his mobile and PC for just the basics and I tell him the same when it comes to my mobile phone with the exception of my PC which I use every day but also use for gaming, apart from that I offered to teach him sometime (because I volunteer at a local public computer club up my road to help the elderly or the tech Luddites to use their PC's for general use but also other tech they bring as well) but I also told him I feel the same way about mobile phones in the regards that in the old days people just used them to talk and message one another, not take selfies and browse the web etc.
I think I'll always be that guy who just sees his mobile for messaging and calls no matter what it does, I'm just old fashioned in that area of the tech industry.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Yes I think you have provided some very good perspective here. There needs to be a balance between true innovation and knowing what the market needs or wants. Sometimes venturing onto untested ground with ground breaking ideas isnt the approach that will guarentee success. So yest you are right, this isnt just a question of innovation or the lack of. I stand corrected to this extent.

Idk, it's gotten pretty "meh" for me. When I first got a smart phone, it was like crack. Now it's like, I have to be pretty damn bored to go on the thing. I've done it all a million times etc.

It's not just about browsing and wasting time that makes a smartphone so useful. I use it to track my workouts using Jefit, I use it to find food places when I'm in a new area or just not sure where a certain place is, use it to find faster routes, it lets me know when an accident happened before I leave for work, it reroutes me around traffic, I use it as my podcast and mp3 player and phone all through my cars bluetooth, use it as a camera and video recorder for those special nights with my lady, and soon I'll be using it to communicate with my home automation system to turn on lights, open the garage, and turn on the TV and reciever once I'm about to exit the highway and be home.
If they think they are about to come out with a product to replace all of that cool I'm ready.

I suppose I never relied on it as much as you and that's why I feel that way. Outside of GPS and the ability to call for help in a wreck or some other emergency, I really don't rely on it for anything. Maybe a calculator? For me, it was all about social networks, playing little ios games, texting etc. It was a portable entertainment device and that's why for me anyway, it's gotten old. I suppose if you have come to rely on it to manage your entire life, like you have, then yeah, I can see why people aren't going to let go.
