Just finished Birthright on hard.
Positives
-MyCastle is a great new feature that allows for a lot more interaction with units. I'd like to see it get expanded on in the future, but as it stands, it's a really nice addition that serves as a good in-between mission distraction.
-Minor characters tend to fall back on one annoying personality trait a lot less than they did in Awakening.
-Enemy and map variety are both really enjoyable. I like the contrasting styles of weapons between Hoshido and Nohr.
-Pairing units up got nerfed big time, which I think was a necessity considering how OP it could get in Awakening. Encourages thoughtful unit placing.
-Towards the end, the story pulled out a few major twists that really got to me.
Negatives
-A lot of my complaints with Awakening went unaddressed or were made even worse. Enemies spawn in with no warning all the time, and can really screw you over on some occasions.
-Despite minor characters being less stereotypical, the main characters aren't anywhere near as well fleshed out or as memorable as Awakening's main cast.
-The ending feels somewhat sequel baitish (or in this case, DLC baitish) at the end, with a lot of questions left unanswered. Also, some major plot threads go absolutely nowhere (like Corrin's dragon powers).
-Some minor nitpicky things, but the explanation for kids (and even their inclusion in the game) is really questionable and makes for some terrible parents. I'm also not a fan of how everyone in the game simply "retires," even those who aren't plot vital.
Overall, Birthright's a good game, but I don't think it's quite as good as Awakening was. Perhaps playing Conquest and Revelation will make me reconsider my position on the entire product as a whole, but Birthright feels like 90% or so of a complete game with the story threads left hanging.
