"I know Nintendo said that simply porting old Nintendo games to mobile devices wouldn't be a sound strategy."

Enough said. No.

Indeed.

Most people don't grasp Nintendo's strategy. They think that Nintendo will make smartphone games to make some good money on the side, but the main purpose is to tie people into the Nintendo ecosystem and sell more dedicated gaming hardware and software. Exposure to Nintendo IPs, advertisements for Nintendo products, and reward points that can be redeemed on Nintendo systems. Making money from smartphone games is only a secondary concern.

Yep, same with the theme park attractions & films/series based on their IP, the primary goal is to increase brand recognition and advertise their products, making money is a secondary concern while still being a major incentive.

They won't port those type of games because they are not appealing to the casuals

Sure they are.

Some of the best selling games on the DS like 'Brain Age' sold purely to a casual audience.

'Brain Age' would transition well to mobile.

In fact I can think of plenty of Nintendo franchise games such as 'WarioWare' from the Gameboy Advance era that would translate great to mobile.

Sure but games like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem like the OP suggest won't be launched on mobile imo.

So no to releasing Mario Paint's fly swatting minigame on iOS? I thought it would work great with touch controls (It already does as an Easter Egg in Super Mario Maker).

You must really have a low opinion of mobile gamers if you think a fly swatting game would make it to the top of ideas Nintendo would greenlight to increase the positive reception of their brand on mobile.

Not really, it's mostly I can't think of any mobile games that work enough like Nintendo games, unless you count the iOS port of Shantae: Risky's Revenge.

Plus I love the fly swatting minigame.

None of the Nintendo mobile games are going to work like Nintendo games. None of them are going to play even a little bit like the iOS port of Shantae: Risky's Revenge.
