You'd be surprised by how many people agree with me. Even most people who say they disagree secretly think otherwise.

I'm sure there are those that agree. Doesn't change anything, though. I play plenty of "real" PlayStation and Xbox games. Many would agree with that, too!

Well, good for you. Let's just hope they don't become extinct.

WiiU and PC all the way in this case.

Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-5643-2927-1984

Animal Crossing NH Dream Address: DA-1078-9916-3261

There would be no Xbox without a Playstation being in the industry.

We would likely be playing on the Wii U, XBO, or PC, haha. I'm pretty sure Xbox and DRM wasn't going to fly anyways. People would have likely fought against it anyways and would eventually get rid of the DRM.

If Xbox AND Sony did DRM though, than would be a different story...

In a very bad place. I imagine every game would be more expensive and with more expensive DLC. Japanese gaming would've have completely crashed and/or in part have gone to Nintendo. Microsoft would be making little effort in the first party camp and we would be beeing force fed kinects. Games would all require a permanent internet connection. Millions would just never adopt the new system.

So... yeah... in a worse place. Microsoft is very abusive when they find themselves in a monopoly like situation.

MS would be light years behind monopolizing anything in the gaming industry.

Most people would still end up buying Xbox One due to a lack of choice. I would guess the current gen market would be slightly smaller than what it is now, and we would see less support from MS as they wouldn't have a reason to try to please gamers to buy their system. It would be worse for non-Nintendo console gamers overall. Nintendo would be slightly better off, but not a big difference.

I wonder how it would affect the PC games. Would MS actually support both in terms of gaming?

I would sulk on the corner.

Why wouldn't they have still changed? The Wii U existed and still exists. And with no PS4 console you'd see A LOT more third party companies releasing their games on Wii U.

And with no PS4 who knows what MS would have done. The Xbone could have been drastically different. For example it doesn't need the power if it's only competition is the Wii U.

It would have made this gen even more of an underpowered stop gap gen than it is.

Maybe it's a stop gap for you,  but as a ps4 owner I'm more than happy to see no successor for another 5 years.

Great replies, some really interesting theories and feelings coming out of the hypothetical situation.

Some say they would go to PC, others saying they would follow japanese titles wherever they went.

Then quite a few believe Xbox and WiiU would have benifitted to varying degrees from Sony's absence.

One or two of you seem to think gaming would be better off without Sony as they "develop niche games that should not exist" and somehow impact negatively on "real games" (whatever that means)

I found it really interesting, the post that claimed it was a possibility that the game industry would have a collapse as was prophesised by many in the media. That would be pretty scary.

Then a number of people credit the Sony reveal with pushing Phil Spencer to be the head of xbox and all the resulting goodness since, such as backwards compatability and the broadening of genres in the exclusive line-up. So in a way the Xbox userbase is a key benificiary of Sony still being in the industry.
