It's simple, AAA would be finished. Watch that Jimquisition episode about Square Enix and how publishers were trying to move away from traditional gaming by experimenting with f2p, online, episodic stuff etc around 2012-2013, but then PS4 happened. Also ever wondered why 2014 and most of last year were so dry with current gen game releases?

Microsoft wouldn't have backed out of anything, I can tell you that much. They would keep doing all sorts of awful stuff because we wouldn't have a choice in the matter if we wanted to keep gaming on consoles, and Nintendo...would probably be doing equally as badly, so no change there, I guess.

Im strictly a Nintendo gamer, but having competition is good. So im glad sony exist

I used to be too, I swore off PS1 and bought a PS2 begrudgingly. I bought a PS3 because of MGS4 and by the end of last gen Sony had me convinced they were about the games and gamers. My first console was a NES with Turtles II, so I am really excited about the turtles game this year! :)

So my question is "where would we be if Sony had bowed out of consoles", what if xbox was the only option out there? Would you have been happy with drm and daily log-ins and kinect and everything the ecosystem was going for? Would you have stuck with consoles? Would there have been an alternative?

Yes, and that would be called Nintendo and their systems.If Sony were to "dissapear", Nintendo would at least receive all the japanese third party support, since japanese are not fond of the Xbox.And if played the cards right, Nintendo could with the NX have received all the support Sony had (and currently have) with the PS4, and then we would have again a console for the gamers.

 

I agree that if Sony didnt do the things that it did with the PS4(taking out the internet subscription fee.I HATE needing to pay the internet for a game that i own), this would be a bad generation in terms of costumer rights, but nature would fix things itself, as i stated above, so it wouldnt be the end of the world.
