Forums - Gaming - Should Nintendo Drop out of the Console Race?

If you think about it, nobody likes Nintendo. Some statisticians would say that Nintendo is statistically insignificant and that with 95% confidence you can say Nintendo does not matter.

Assuming this Generation last at least a few more years, the PS4 could sell around 150 million units while Xbox One will sell a healthy 65-70 million units. The Wii U on the other hand, will be less than 15 million units before it gets replaced.

Other points:

Nintendo has trouble making any profits

Japan is a dying market (especially now with negative interest rates)

Handheld business is dying

Nintendo franchises arent as good as they once were (for example Zelda, Pokemon)

Nintendo is not run well (takes 6-7 years + to make one new Zelda game)

Nintendo has very poor online service

No third party support

High prices

Nintendo should reorganize and consider dropping out of the hardware race and build quality games on multiple platforms. After all, who really even likes Nintendo Hardware? People only liked Nintendo because of their games. Am I right?

Saying that just because of one "bad" generation? And even with those bad sales are managing to make a profit.lol

Of course not.Nintendo will always be doomed in these "experts" or "statisticians" opinions, and yet it always thrives on.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I'll wait and see their approach with the NX. If they have not learned their lesson after this, then yes, it is time.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

No, I def don't agree. Ninten keeps things interesting for me game wise and hardware wise, and if they left, gaming would kind of start to get boring for me.

Has Nintendo lost money with a console after it runs its course? Only the VirtualBoy. Even the 3DS and the WiiU, with their initial big losses, became profitable after some years. As long as Nintendo is profitable, they won't abandon the console race. They will compensate less profits with ammibos or mobile projects, but as long as they can win money, they won't feel the need to stop producing hardware.

Also, most of the arguments you are using are really weak and can be argued.

-Nintendo has trouble making any profits? No, they have an almost impecable track record on their profits.

-Japan is a dying market (especially now with negative interest rates)? No, it's just mobile has eaten part of that market. Nintendo's grip of the japanese market is as strong as always.

-Handheld business is dying? Maybe, but Nintendo has around 80% marketshare, a percentage that will only become bigger when the Vita gets discontinued. The handheld market will not die, it just has shrunk considerably. And a shrunk market is not the same as a dead market.

-Nintendo franchises arent as good as they once were (for example Zelda, Pokemon)? Absolutely not. The attach ratios of those franchises prove that they still have that pull. And if you're talking quality-wise, that's just a matter of opinion.

-Nintendo is not run well (takes 6-7 years + to make one new Zelda game). Sure, but consider the amount of software they release each year and the fact they have been supporting two different consoles per generations.

-Nintendo has very poor online service. They are also the only console that has all online multiplayer free. Do you want all consoles to block online multiplayer under a fee?

-No third party support. They have barely any western support, but companies like Capcom, SE, Sega, Level5 and Namco-Bandai are still making games for Nintendo devices, even if they work mainly on handhelds.

-High prices. This is just what you feel it's worth your money. And for the longest time, Nintendo has had the stigma of being the cheaper product, with things like the GameCube, the Wii and the DS significantly cheaper than their competition.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

You forgot about the handhelds, they sold around 70M hardware units this gen. It's a bad result, but far from irrelevant. And they still have a lot of powerful IPs.

Your extrapolation is wrong. PS4 would be around 100m and Xbox One would be around 40-45 million. To reach your numbers they'd both need a explosion in sales over the next few years.

not sure if troll thread or not, either way. 3DS is doing preatty good, almost 60 million isnt that bad. But 3DS software sales are very high. Pokemon games arent declining in sales that much, they still do really good. Main-line zelda games are still just as good. and sell preatty good aswell. Japan isnt dying. Just look at splatoon. Splatoon now even has vocaloids where people go to. Thats insane. Nintendo online servies are not the best. But they arent that bad. E-shop is very good. I really like that one.  Nintendo still makes alot of profits.

Nintendo was one of the first in the console race. They been in it way before the other 2 and set up the groundwork. Nintendo is here to stay for a long time, and it wouldn't suprise me if they would be the last ones to exit the console race!
