Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Pokémon are all 10+ million sellers, they still certainly have strong mainstream appeal, I can't think of a single other developer/publisher that has that many huge franchises.

Only Pokemon and Mario  are 10+ million sellers.

Animal Crossing is Irregular (3-10 millions)

Mario Kart and Smash are 5+ million sellers

Splatoon and Zelda are 4+ million sellers

Metroid 2+ million seller

Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi are 1+ million seller

Animal Crossing: New Leaf shipments were 9.44 million as of Sept 30, 2015 and is still showing legs, it will pass 10 million. Super Smash Bros. 3DS+Wii U shipments were at 11.40 million as of Sept 30, 2015, even if we take into account people who own both versions, it will still be over 10 million unique sales when all is said and done.

Pokémon X/Y, Pokemon OR/AS, Mario Kart 7, Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario 2, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing are all franchises that have or will have crossed 10 million by the end of the generation.

Like you guys said, they are partially mainstream already thanks to amazing IPs. But regarding hardware, it can go either way, there's nothing set in stone yet. But I can definitely see them making a comeback. :)

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Ok this generation"Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Pokémon are all 10+ million sellers", ONLY  on 3DS

I think he meant by 3DS sales of those IPs.

Though I don't think they're really distinct audiences for these IP. 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, probably have a ton of overlap for example and even other IPs ... I would probably wager most people who like Animal Crossing like ... Mario too.

If Nintendo had six 10 million selling IP exclusive and they were Mario, Final Fantasy, Uncharted, Star Wars, and FIFA or something that would certainly draw very different demographics.

It's the same for PS4 or XB1, the big sellers all have massive overlap. It's not like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Madden, FIFA, NBA 2K, Battlefront, Destiny, Watch Dogs appeal to vastly different people.

Close to 85% of all retail software sales for PS4/XB1 come from the shooter/sports/racing/action genres.

nope, unless they figure out a way to get people to give a damn about there consoles, doesnt matter how much software they sell, they always sell software.

Why should a publisher's relevance be based entirely on hardware when they stil sell incredible great software to millions of fans and newcomers alike?

because the HW is where they are suffering and when the OP is talking about being mainstream again, we talking HW.

Something I disagree is Call of Duty being the Mario of this era. It's lacking quality, Mario used (and still is) to sell an insane amount per game plus releasing quality games, something cod rarely do anymore

Answering the question, I don't think they will ever again unless Sony quits the video game market/development of consoles, what amazing new thing can they add to their consoles games to dominate like they did back then? There's nothing else

They never stopped being mainstream.

Somebody's scared of Nintendo.

*Rereads OP*

Huh you're right.

Well I guess I would counter OP's defintion of mainstream being limited to the hardware performance in sale if the software still sells really well and has potential to sell more in the future.

So what, I'm supposed to exclude the side of Nintendo's business that accounts for about 80% of their marketshare?
