Forums - Gaming - Lets talk FIGHTING GAMES

Once upon a time, back when multiplayer usually meant split screen. Fighting games were the crux of multiplayer gaming. As a kid I used to have my pad in my backpack for whenever I went to someone's house just to play SF2t. And when ever we had a fight meet at my house. Everyone came with their own controllers.

I still believe fighting games are the purest competitive multiplayer type games. Simple pure skill. You against me. And that they require brutal training and skill to master.

However, I feel that fighting games are going about their current business model all wrong. In this day, the likely hood of finding a loooot of people willing to spend $60 for a fighting gsme is increasingly low. And I feel that they have the most to benefit from a "freemium" business model. But not just freemium, ad supported. There are tons of places in a fighting game to throw in an ad or two. I mean I would even rather watch a ten second video ad while the game is looking for a match for me instead of some "searching/connecting screen" with a ring on the screen.

With gamers only required to pay for an ad free experience or to customize their characters. But the core of the game should be free. Time release tokens will allow you play online, practice mode and story mode will be free, or with $1 you can buy 4/5 tokens if you aren't willing to wait for your daily token quota.

What do you all think of that? What are the possible pros and cons of such a system.

It sounds like you are proposing that devs go for a free-to-play or free-to-start model? I don't think having a free model with ads sounds like a good idea. It sounds like it would get annoying fast. I think maybe MS and Killer Instinct have a good system going on? I dunno, I don't have the game.

I'm not very keen on those ideas. I'd rather have a full game available to buy. I don't buy fighting games anymore most because of the art styles fighters have gone these days. I wasn't and still am not big on Street Fighter's style. Also, I don't really like buying fighters on Sony consoles due to trophies. I know it's easy to avoid them, but I don't like them being there, and some of them may require online to get those trophies to get, online won't always be around, and... that's just a mess I'd rather not get into.

I still enjoy playing fighters back in the old days though, where everything was done with sprites... x )

Unless you are buying some incredibly niche fighter, I doubt you are going to have a problem with online tbqh.

Well, if they don't have any trophies attached to them, that would be great for me, haha...

what? thats a silly reason and it means you will avoid all MS and Sony console- and possible NX games if i am correct?

You can hide trophies of a game by the way

Yeah, it has been that way for awhile haha. Haven't really bought any fighters on Sony and MS consoles for that reason, and I am okay with it. Most of my favorite fighters are from the old arcade cabinets anyways.

And even though I can hide them, I just don't like the idea of them being there. So I just avoid them. That's just me though, haha... If NX continues to not have trophies, I will get them there. x )

Practically every game and console is going to have online trophies in some form... I am not sure you are really going to avoid it regardless of where you game unless its a SP only title.

That's probably why I am rather picky with my games on consoles with trophies. Anything with heavy trophies I tend to stay away. I think most of the games I do have on my PS3 are SP games...

Picking games based on their trophies sounds incredibly strange, and not practical if you are just playing to have fun.

You can just as well play them on a different account that is not your main.

Yeah, I have a real bad completionist habit when it comes to games. I used to try doing it for all my PS3 games, but I just got burnt out, and having the trophies there is just a reminder of something I feel I need to complete, but don't really want to. Adding more of them to the list would just make stress out more, haha...

I can use a different account, but I would rather not need to have to sign on a different account for specific games every time I want to play it...

I'm fine with missing out some games though. I have other games to occupy me. : D

It would require a mere 5 seconds of your time, tops.

Yeah, that is true, but I would have to do it every time... : X

Various devs are trying various models like that now.
