I noticed an annoying trend lately, a lot of game sequels or new ip's have female chracters as protagonists. Now this isn't something bad on itself but i have the feeling that a lot of developer force them selves to make the protagonist of their game a female just to be politically correct, i mean i have nothing against female characters being playable but in a industry mostly dominated by male people (yes there are a lot more males playing video games than females, don't kid yourself) to shift it's focus soley on female protagonist just to be politically correct or to avoid stereotypes in video games, just isn't right.
I mean i myself don't like it to play as a female character, that's mostly because i like to identify myself with my hero and i am really not so hot about the idea to spend 60$ to play as a female. And i do get a lot of flack for this.
Long story short, with the rise of feminist in our (western) society, i fell like their influence is reaching the gaming industry and i do not like it, not at all. Especially considering females tend to bash video games more than males.
So what's your thought on this? Did you notice that trend too? Would it annoy you to see your favorite franshise change it's protagonist to a female? And most importantly...does my view on this make me a misagonist?

Someone might argue that that can be said by any woman that plays Videogames, but honestly I feel the same.

Imho devs shuold just go the Pokémon route where you can chose your sex and NPCs don't care about it but act according to the relationship you have with them and not your gender.

The only exception should be canon characters that are icons of their own franchise such as Mario, Batman, Link (tough someone thinks that they might add Linkle to the next Zelda games I'm not positive they'll do it ) and so on...

Isn't that a woman in your avatar?

I'm sorry , I should have gone more in depth, I share the OP's feelings to a far lesser extent, particularly when I feel that the female character doesn't fit the story, that's why I brought up the Pokémon franchise as an example, Metroid is another good example since in 99% of situations you only have to interact with aliens they won't act depending on your gender but they'll simply identify as a Friend or as an Enemie...

Give some examples.

Tomb Raider does not count as Lara is an iconic character. The only other major game I can think of is Horizon Zero Dawn. whoopdeedoo.

The way in which you used the term politically correct tells me all I need to know about the type of person you are. Try again, mate.

Here's a female protagonist for you...

Political correctness INDEED!  :P

I have this game by the way...

Alright so for those of you who can't follow my logic, just look at E3 2015, the majority of new ip's had female protagonists here are some examples: ReCore, Horizon and then there are game sequels like dishonored 2 which gives you at least a choice but still in the trailer they only showed the female character. Then there also game annoucements outside E3 like Detroit become human, ni no kuni 2, the new nier game and the list goes on... When was the last time we had a new ip with a male protagonist? Because it feels like it 's been quite a while.

If every single character I play happens to be a female from this point on, I would not have an issue with it and wouldn't think twice about it.

If we make all characters female no one will be forced anymore because it's the norm.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Is it because of Star Wars? With Rey being the awesome hero?

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

As long as they don't change male protagonist into females and vice versa everything is cool

The Order 1886

Bloodborne

Splatoon (but it does cater to the squidist crowd)

Signature goes here!

Yeah that too, it is not only happening in gaming, also in other industries.

But i don't care for star wars so it's not like i am a butthurt star wars fan
