How is the materia? Does it work better than FFVII like equipping and mixing?

A little ashamed to say, but I never really played FFVII... what I can compare it with is it's kinda similar to Jeanne D'Arc's mixing method. You combine 2 (in Crisis Core, you later on have the option of combining 2 with another item) and creating something more powerful.

but what's different is that if you want to create something better (say.. Fire to Fira to Firage), you have to power those up via a lot of battle and lucky spins.

so far... I haven't had much luck spin at all... I have grown to level 20 (faster than my last 2 tries) but I have only 1 Thundera and 1 Curage. Which means most of my other attacks are as weak as well. *sighs*.

Update:

I'm 7 hours in.. Level 20, only 13% of Mission completed (I spent 3 hours doing just the missions), I managed to have. 3 out of 5 Summons. and Chocobo, Cait Sith and Moogle... although stupid Moogle never appeared for me even once. :(

and I believe I'm in chapter 4 (out of 10+ chapters)

You haven't played the original? Guess you don't know the ending....

So if you want to power up your materia, you have to fight alot. Sounds like its similar to FFVII. Is the lucky spin that 3 slot thing? That thing looks whack.

lol, Well, I know a little bit of it, but I rather keep myself a tiny bit surprised.

I actually LOVED the lucky spin slot, it's what keeps every battle unique. Since if you master "dodge", you can pretty much escape most attacks. But once they get you. Wow, punishing, I got hit with 1700 once. My whole health was 2300. I was lucky to have "Health Break" at the time. (where you get more health than you normal health point)

Oh man, during boss battle, you PRAY for that spin to save your life. lol,

My last complain, the reward system is a little weird. In one Mission, I had to fight off a Summon and all I got to show for it was a Potion. WTF??

How can you give a Japanese game .4/10 more points if you don't even understand how to play it? At least the English game is playable.

 I do know how to play, just not all the details of all the conversation and looking up all the magics was kinda a pain

 judging my score without playing the game? Amazing.

Okay explain how you can give the Japanese game that is a bit more boring a higher score. Is it because of the Japanese voice acting that you don't understand?  Or the different use of the O and X buttons.
