Forums - Gaming - Highest on Metacritic vs. Game with most GOTY awards

GOTY has more appeal, but when it isn't the highest rated game it usually wasn't the best game that year.

I don't agree. Reviews are done by 1 person at the publication, usually by someone who's either already a fan of the series or a fan of the genre. GOTY take into account the opinions of all the editors.

GOTY awards go to multiplats for the same reason that mainstream titles generally win the Oscar. Awards are only partially about the quality of the work. They are also indicative of each publication's audience. Gaming publications are a business.

How many people will keep reading if the GOTY each 365 is a game they haven't played (and can't because it's exclusive to a console they don't own)?

"Dragon Age: Inquisition" is a perfect example. It was one of the best games that most of the gaming world had access to - and a bestseller. Those two qualifications weigh just as heavily into GOTY lists as quality.

You also have to consider that many GOTY awards are given out by publications that follow one platform alone. Those games on many platforms are obviously going to get more overall awards.

What about Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us tho ? These are single-platform games tbh.

Especially Uncharted 2, it reign both Metacritics and GOTY. It's also the only one.

Spot-on!

Tho, im still surprised that The Witcher 3 is GameSpot GOTY instead of MGSV. Even tho most editors favorite games of 2015 is MGSV.

Side note: Bloodborne is the most popular exclusive among the GameSpot favorite list.

Nintendo has won plenty of GOTY awards. They simply haven't won a majority any of those years. The reasons for that have been stated above in various ways.

Yeah so I guess Witcher III, Dragon Age: Inquistion, Elder Scrolls IV and V, Resident 4, Fallout 3, and Uncharted 2 were not a sequel?

This!

Naughty Dog is immensely overrated. I see reviewers complaining all the time about sequels that don't change up enough, but the very same people will no doubt vote for Uncharted 4 as GOTY next year. Uncharted's story is about the same quality as Indiana Jones, yet reviewers praise it like it's Tolstoy's War and Peace or Dante Alighieri's La Divina Commedia. The same with The Last of Us, the story is on par with I am Legend (a movie I like, but hardly think is a generation defining movie...).

The problem with Western media is that they almost completely ignore handheld gaming. Yet there have been handheld games that can very much be considered some of the best games of the generation (like A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem: Awakening/Fates, Metroid: Fusion/Zero Mission, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, The Minish Cap, Bowser's Inside Story, Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, Pokémon Silver/Gold/Crystal, etc.)

All games that are vastly better than the sorry list of GOTY picks in the OP (imo).

Getting GOTY while being a console exclusive game is extremely difficult. Lets be honest, it is hard for a lot of people to recognize that sometimes consoles can top PCs.

There is only one developer that can consistently unite critics and users regardless of their preference.

Naughty Dog has managed to pull off the Best Game and Best Developer card in two occasions and I have the feeling that the third one will be an actual charm.

That they ignored nintendo when they were releasing gems onto a console that lead the gen in sales (Wii) probably rules out any chance of them winning in the future now that their market share has plummeted.

It will always be beneficial to be a multiplat or PC, though it does appear they overlooked that trend with uncharted 2 and the last of us... Perhaps that was the one window that nintendo didn't happen to have its best ready for.

What games are releasing in 2016? I'd still give it really low odds but there may be a small chance Zelda might win if there aren't any killer multiplats to compete with.

Fire Emblem: Fates (a lot of people who played it say it's better than Awakening) and Zelda U (from the little we saw the production values are out of this world) should be competitors (but they probably won't be). Super Mario Galaxy losing to Bioshock is simply appaling. I think the legacy left behind by SMG is far greater than Bioshock.

That also means that the more people who have played a game, the more likely it is to win. For instance, last year Gamespot's Wii U GOTY was Mario Kart 8 because only 2 or 3 of them had played Bayonetta 2.

o_O ???

Well, that's like your opinion man, lol. I guess one's man treasure is another man's trash, is very true :3.

Anyways, your opinion is wrong tbh. What about the Metacritics User's Score ? I mean if the game is surely overrated, im sure gamers will downgraded like they do to other games to balancing things out.

Not with the Last of Us tho, it's still the most rated and one of the best rated game on Metacritics.
