Some may have wanted a little more depth than what the grid sphere had to offer but the lv. locks, battle exchange and costomizable weapons and armor kept things at least a little interesting. Calling it a major flaw seems to be a bit of an exaggeration.
Now ffX's story was no xenogears. It took a different aproach. The story of this game is not full of twists, turns and revelations but thrives off of each of the characters personalities and emotions(scratch Lulu and Kimari). These are helped to be manifested through music, presentation and linearity of the game to create a enthralliing, powerful and life changing journey. The overall atmosphere created was something that went unrivaled.
If you didn't feel a sense of amazment, dread, excitement, forboding, anticipation and fear when you finally reached Zanarkand then you are an emotionless stone. Square didn't write a story of complexity for us to try and wrap our heads around . It's the way that it was told to us where everything comes together in a wonderful experience that tears at our heart string(i know sounds lame).
The atmosphere and presentation of the story is the focal point of FFX and if you couldn't appreciate that then I can see why you wouldn't think this game is great.
I didn't really like some things about the the game too(yuna's VA) but I can still recognize what the game does. If I could compare this game's story style to any other it would be OOT(different games entirely, I know). If you look at the fundamentals of the story it would seem like trash compared to what most RPGs have. But the atmosphere is astounding and makes for arguably the best game ever made.
