Forums - Gaming - Is Xenoblade Chronicles X Underrated?

Apparently somebody missed the fact that "Skyrim", "Witcher 3" and, "Fallout 4" can literally all fit within the world of "XCX" together with shoulder room.

And that makes it better than those... why?

Xenoblade is big, sure. But many of you here consider it the best thing since sliced bread and the only argument that's brought up is that it has a massive map. How does it make it good, when the map is mostly barren and only serves as a battleground with barely anything unique to find other than monsters? That, or people mention that it has unmatched art direction. Which I really don't see. Ni No Kuni, for example, had much better art direction. And so does Zelda U. And when it comes to the other parts of its game design, it may have some interesting ideas, but the execution feels archaic on most accounts. That's not mentioning the very badly designed user interface.

Don't get me wrong. I am currently playing the game (Don't believe me? Add me: NNID = Hynad81), and it's still quite fun and mostly a joy to explore. But for all it does very well, it does something bad on the side. For me, it prevents it from feeling as good as the greats that came before it.

I don't necessarily think it's better than those games. I love "Fallout 4". I just think XCX deserves a spot at the GOTY discussion. I knew it would be large, complex, and pretty to look at. The most pleasant surprise that came with the game is how addictive it is. It's the most fun I've had with a game this year. Also, the story has been heavily trashed in the gaming press - especially in Japan. At first, I could see where that commentary was coming from. Half way through the campaign, though, things are starting to get very interesting... It's almost as if the journalists put 30 hours, max, into the game before reviewing it.

EDIT: I also think the art design is excellent. Hardly the best to come along, but it definitely has an edge on most of the generic AAA releases of 2015.

All games you mentioned have serious flaws as well and serious bugs on top. Xenoblade X plays easily in the same league as these games in terms of quality.

But XCX is not as mainstream and more complex as Fallout or Witcher and it is always hard for a niche game to be recognized by mainstream media.

I don't think XCX is a complex game. I think it seems complex because of how badly the user interface was designed. As for the flaws, I haven't played Fallout 4, but I didn't find many flaws in The Witcher 3. It has some bugs and glitches, but none of them were game breaking. I can't think of a single flaw that affected my enjoyement of the game, as opposed to XCX.

I don't know, I've played the three games and XCX seems by miles the more complex. Just the variety of weapons and armors, the class system, the variety of NPCs, each one with his own special habilities, you have lots of posibililities of combining arts... I don't know what's wrong with tue UI (except the font size, ugh), but it's fairly good for using arts.

Yes, its underrated.

first we should discuss if it is better than the original xenoblade.

It's such a massive and complex game that I can understand why journalists didn't liked it that much. It requires too much time.

On the exploration, battle system, graphics and level design side it's definitely better. The others points are purely subjective and up to everyone (except the music : god bless Ace+)

How many times will ppl throw underrated and overrated around till they understand ? Somethings ratings arent based on your personal opinion, or on any 1 persons opinion, its a consensus reached after the thing in question has been evaluated by many media outlets and consumers alike, so when the consensus is that a game is not GOTY material and you think otherwise, its you who has an opinion that diverges from the average. The same is true the other way around (when ppl call something overated).

Its OK to like or dislike something more or less than the average, but understand you opinion wont change the consensus about anything.

That's its own thread, to be honest. The first game definitely wins on the character/story front. "X" is just a downright rewarding game (exempting the inability to drop tedious fetch quests). I'm torn.

No, I think it stands a middle ground. It's neither under or overrated. The Wii U base seems to be enjoying it greatly now xD

I think the Xenoblade characters were not so great. In X you have affinity missions who gives you an actual background of the characters, while in XC they were just mere plot devices.
