During the 4th quarter of calendar year 2002 the cumulative Production Shipments of PlayStation 2 Hardware reached 49.59 million units with a total of 8.03 million sold in for the entire quarter.

This consisted of 1.5 million Production Shipments to Japan distributors, 3.3 million Production Shipments to North American distributors and 3.3 million Production Shipments to European and PAL distributors.

The total amount sold through to end users exceeded 8.5 million worldwide across November and December, which included shipments made and recognised prior to the quarter.

Please note that Production Shipments are no longer the reporting method of Sony Computer Entertainment, since 2007 the company has been using Shipments to Retailers as its primary reporting method.

Based on publicly available data the PlayStation 4 may not have as strong sell through but Hardware Shipments for the quarter may be up in both North America and Europe versus Production Shipments of PlayStation 2 during the final quarter of calendar year 2002.

They're expecting good sales from January - March so I'm sure they'll ship as much as possible this December.

3.5m is possible in the US alone so I can definitely see 9m WW. That's my guess and I'm being optimistic.

Will Sony definitely release shipment numbers for the quarter?

Yep every quarter! Why wouldn't they? PS4 sales are spectacular!

Hmmmm, do sales in the row compensate for the deficit in Japan? I hope you understand my question! :)

Not really. They do add up. But Japan back in PS1/PS2 days was a big market on its own.

Long may these spectacular sales continue :)

With the Uncharted bundle being out of stock (and the 299 price drop ending this saturday), I expect 9 million at absolute max.

Nope. I don't see it. Even with the price drop I doubt that'll happen.

If they decide to try a t the last minute, it would be very difficult or impossible, but if they planned it in advance, producing a lot during dead periods and stockpiling enough units, the only problem left to solve would be logistics, and that too should have been planned in advance if they plan in an acceptably accurate way.

NB: my answer is to the question whether SHIPPING all those units would be feasible, not whether they could be sold to end users.
