Forums - Gaming - My firs time playing a Fallout game and...

....I like it, but imho its no game of the year. The fun of this game is purely in the gameplay. The world is lifeless and holds itself together artistically only by the sum of its parts. As a person who grew up playing videogames for a long time, this type of development brings me back to the early 2000's of PC gaming. Good game for sure, but I cannot put my stamp on it right now that this beats Bloodborne or the Witcher 3 at all. I would give the game decent scores for now but it will be a interesting time grading it as some of the bugs bother me and the distant look of some characters borderline modeling six years back. I knew kids at my college who developed better NPC models. Just saying.

As I said, the beauty of this game is essentially the sum of its parts. Its a second rate fps (Dont get me started on the awkwardness of the third person)with RPG elements and the conversation system  is left wanting from where I stand in my first five hours. Hopefully in time the game starts to grow on me.

Eh ? but this isnt the GOTY 2015.
Witcher 3 is.

Yeah, that's the problem, it's Bethesda's Fallout...Interplay's/Black Isle's Fallout 1/2 are completely different games that actually have a good story and memorable characters...in addition to actually being RPGs, which Fallout with FO4 is not really anymore.

Of course. It was considered a contender and was expected to win before it launched based on fanfare. GOTY is based on the opinions of various people and sites, not the VGA's. The VGA's is just a highly publicized source funded by a highly publicized name and has a board who discuss contention because they have the telvized voice to do so.

Interesting assessment. I must research Interplay and Black isle.

If you're a c/W/RPG fan check them out, they've made some of the best games out there - Planescape: Torment and FO1/2 are often to be found in Top 3 c/W/RPG lists, some of the guys from Black Isle went on to form Troika Games which made two additional gems (Arcanum and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines) and some of the folks made Obsidian - that's why you'll see a lot of 'let Obsidian handle Fallout' on the net, since that is where lot of the folks who created original are (in addition to "let them, and not BioWare make KOTOR 3").

Brian Fargo, who founded Interplay, and who produced Fallout as sort of sequel/reimaging of his old game Wasteland  from late 80s (EA had rights to IP at the time, IIRC), is now owner of inXile, who made Wasteland 2 and is currently making Torment: Tides of Numenera, spiritual successor of Planescape: Torment - they are quite close with Obsidian, honestly would love to see them merge at one point.

You should check out New Vegas.

Yeah, Bethesdas Fallouts are terrible compared to Black Iles, you should really check them out. Bethesda practically ruined the Fallout franchise. Fallout4 might just be the biggest let down this gen for me.

Bethesda is the only reason fallout is still a thing.

I still haven't played it or Elder Scrolls. They just don't look good to me.

It's not that they're terrible. The Genre has changed that's all.
