It's a massive assumption to say that "the XBox One will always have a BC advantage over PS4", it's assumed that it's impossible to make PS3 games run on PS4, but it's already clear with XB1's BC that the RISC to CISC thing is possible to overcome, something that hardly anybody thought was possible.
SPUs could be emulated by PS4's GPU, with a Virtual Machine created to facilitate the process and a separate wrapper to translate ISA code to a language that PS4's GPU can work with.

I'm yet to see a legitimate argument for why PS3 games can't be made to run on PS4, other than the lack of effort from Sony's development resources.
Also as others have stated, these PS2 games aren't simple ports, they're improved, remasters of those games, which Sony's development team have put work into. to make them look and run better, while also adding trophy support.

People really do love to downplay positive things.

I don't think it can be argued that PS3 playback on PS4 is impossible, just not worth the effort. Might as well put the development dollar somewhere thats worth it.

This will depend on the person you ask.

Clearly BC is of value to some people, it's certainly of value to some, maybe a lot of people. Sony felt the need to use emulation to run PS2 games, obviously these are improved, so they have some interest in using their resources to get some older Playstation home consoles working on PS4.

My comment is really just about the possibility of making PS3 games work on PS4 and that I haven't seen any kind of logical argument to really make a case for why it can't be done.

Im talking about from a monetary perspective. I have no doubt that the people who want it would argue its worth the effort, but I doubt any of them could justify a way sony turns a profit by pouring resources into getting PS3 content working on PS4.

I think the fact that its a huge loss leader is all the logical argument you would need to see why it wont be done.

If you already own it, why do you want Sony to give you another copy?

Geez everyone is acting historical over this but lets look at the facts;

1) Sony never advertised "PS2 Backwards Compatibility", people just assumed it was because Digital Foundry discovered that the games are using an emulator.

2) These PS2 games are being sold as PSN games for the PS4, they are essentially new PS4 games, just like all those other PS4 arcade games you can already buy which are also being emulated and have trophies.

3) Because 1 and 2, this explains why PS2 classics on the PS3 (which ARE part of the PS3 Backwards Compatibility including the digital copies) DO NOT cross over to the PS4, it's NOT the same type of games, one is part of "Backwards Compatibility" while the other is just a PS4 game which just so happens to work through emulation, alternatively it could of been a cheep dirty port but the end result would of been the same. In other words it's apples and oranges.

4) People hyped themselves when little info was known, now they are angry that they didn't get what they thought they would get despite "Backwards Compatibility" never being mentioned as a thing on PS4, at least not pertaining to current PS2 games on PS4.

As much as I would of loved this to be proper Backwards Compatibility like the xboxone, considering I have tons of PS2 games on hand, this was clearly not the case based on the facts at hand, but not all may be lost, their still could be hope!

The way I see it, there still could be an actual proper Emulator for Backwards Compatibility in the works, you see I believe that the current PS2 games and future ones will be used as part of a beta run for the PS2 emulator. Obviously the PS2 games out now will be refined as people start proving feedback on performance, this will help refine the emulator more and more, not only that by by the time the PS2 emulator has a solid performance on most PS2 games, say 50-80% of the PS2 library, the Trophy sets for PS2 games would have also built up for the most poplar games. So if I'm on the money, then Sony could announce an official Emulator for proper Disc based Backwards Compatibility at E32016 (including PS2 classics on PS3 being made available on PS4 as Sony merges the PS4 version of PS2 games and PS2 classics together), the caveat being that the emulator would be sold for say $30-$60.

I'm hoping that my theory is correct, at least this way if you want digital PS2 games you have an option, and for those who want to play their PS2 Discs on PS4 then we too would have an option even if we have to buy the emulator. I think it would be a win win, we would get 2 options to play PS2 games and Sony will get to make money on both the digital games as well as the emulator, after all the emulator ain't cheap or free to make so all things considered this would be the best possible outcome.

Anyways, just my 2 cents on the matter since everyone and their mother is gaming ape shit.

Xbox One has Xbox BC? I must have missed that announcement.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

If anyone can make anyone buy something that they already own; well, the jokes on them I guess.

They hid basic online multiplayer behind a paywall, so it´s no surprise that greed lead to this decision. It´s Sony afterall, they have always been arrogant and greedy as fuck.

Microsoft started charging for online with Live from the get go, despite the dream cast having free online years beforehand, so what would that make Microsoft today? Uber greedy fucks?

Also, keep in mind two points, 1) Sony subscription service was first and foremost for 'free' monthly games, It initially supported the PS3, but then the service and monthly games expanded to cover the PSvita and PS4 all for no added cost. 2) Sony moved online into the monthly Games subscription service but only for the PS4, it's funny though, people shat on PSN cause it was shit compared to live the paid service, Sony follows Microsoft way in order to improve PSN, people continue to shit on it...dammed if you, dammed if you don't...their is simply no pleasing some people.

I guess you can stick to PC or WiU if you want free online, but I tell you this, I think even Nintnedo next console, the NX, will charge for online. I'd be surprised if they didn't offer some service similar to Sony's free monthly games sub, but I guess we'll see.

Oh, there was another company beeing greedy as well? MS no less? Then everything is fine, I guess. Since it doesn´t seem to have crossed your mind, they could have easily chosen not to hide basic online gaming behind a paywall. They could have continued their PSN subscription model as it was in the beginning if they wanted to.

But guess what, every non apologist predicted that the PSN model as it was in the beginning was just a trojan horse and that it would develop into Sonys own Xbox Live. Since they were far behind, they knew they needed more incentives in the beginning, that´s all.

I own like 100 PS2 games and I can't play them. I gave away my PS2 and my BC PS3 is broken. :(

Could I just but a PS2? Sure. But my ps3 used to upscale the games to HD.
