While it's doubtful, it is true that literally the only official thing that's been said about it is that they'll be "talking about it" next year. I'd say that does confirm next year, or the year after at the latest, but it's still funny how much we believe based on so little info.

It's a reality check for rumors on the next Nintendo console which has ran rampant this year (most noticeably after E3 to noones surprise).

That would actually be the best thing that could happen to any non-Nintendo gamer because they would go third party.

The Wii U has brought them to the precipice of total irrelevance. 3 more years would seal the deal.

Well let's take a look at year 5/6 for N64, GC, Wii

N64 2001-Paper Mario, Pokémon Stadium 2, Mario Party 3

GC 2006-Chibi Robo, Twilight Princess

Wii 2011-Return to Dreamland, Skyward Sword

Wii 2012-Mario Party 9, Xenoblade Chronicles

The last 3 Nintendo consoles had absolutely shit support after the 4th year, so why not just cut off those extra years of no support?

Exactly! and NX will follow the same path. Nowadays I want more value for my money than 3-4 year lifespans with little to no games. NX=no buy.

If they're smart they have a countdown clock until NX launches in Nintendo headquarters. And that clock hits zero holiday season of 2016. 3DS is being clowned by smartphones at every turn and Wii U isn't lighting the world on fire with sales. Keeping them around for longer than 2 years would be disastrous. It might mean losing customers who feel a way about Wii U, but they can't just keep pumping out games to appease a few disgruntled people and lose money.

I hope it comes and I hope it comes next year. I had a blast with Wii U and I'm ready to move on. If the games are as fun as they were with Wii U then it'll be nothing but good times.

Dont get me wrong, I love my Wii U and enjoyed every minute of it, but Nintendo need to move on from these short hardware lifecycles. If NX stumbles out of the blocks are Nintendo going to pull the plug early on that too. I for one am not taking those risks again. Sony fully backed the PS3 even though it sold poorly at the begining, and the losses they took were huge. However they believed in their product and the support they threw behind it is why they are trusted by gamers and sitting back at the top of the tree again.
