Forums - Sony - PS3 goes BD 2.0 and much more with 2.20

to be honest they can keep BD 2.0 I don't want advertisement in my discs. The beauty of early BD discs was they would just play the movie in great quality. No animations, no mini-games. PERFECT.

The rest doesn't make me high either. On the other hand the PS3 software has gotten pretty good anyway. What I am still missing:

Pan&Scan support for 16:9 TVs (No freaking black bars anymore on a 16:9 TV)
A better online store. (A bit of an embarrassment in the otherwise beautiful interface)
Support for NTFS external hard-discs.
Improved media support is always nice (some avis didn't play)
If PlayTV is enabled I want analogue/cable support please pretty please DVB-T is inexistant in Germany. If the PS3 had this it really would be the ultimate media center.

That's about it, otherwise I am pretty much content with the interface.

Oh god you're a fucking heathen! You want them to Pan and Scan 2.35:1 films to fill all the space in your 16:9 television? Bleah. Hit the zoom key and leave my fucking movies alone.

Besides, that's all they could ever add for a Pan and Scan feature (another zoom function). That shit has to be done manually for each movie to make sure important things aren't cut out of frame. Thank god they're doing it right this time around and no longer listening to people who complain about the black bars on the tv screen.

Nice update

@Kyros - Sony announced that the Playstation Sotire was getting a complete makeover sometime during June.

"Hit the zoom key and leave my fucking movies alone."

Thats exactly what I want. I do not want them encoded in Pan&Scan but I want an option to watch them in Pan&Scan Mode. (Which is possible on 4:3 TVs but not on 16:9 in the PS3) On a 720p TV with 1080p BD you wouldn't even have to upscale anything

"That shit has to be done manually for each movie to make sure important things aren't cut out of frame. "

Pan&Scan information (i.e. where the optimal center of a scene is for zooming) is encoded in the DVD standard and pretty sure also in the BD standard.

"Thank god they're doing it right this time around and no longer listening to people who complain about the black bars on the tv screen.

As I said I don't want the discs reencoded. And complete Pan&Scan (i.e. no black bars at all on 4:3 TVs) are stupid for most movies because you loose too much. On the other hand the complete 2:35:1 encoding on discs is also terrible because you only use half the screen and have a small slot surrounded by black. (On smaller TVs and DVD players without decent zoom DVDs look like shit you cannot even see the faces anymore. On my old TV I always enjoyed the movie on TV more than on DVd because they reencoded it at a sensible 16:9 with modest black bars. Nothing is happening in the outer edges of the screen anyway because even many cinemas are not really 2.35:1.

Just because one extreme is right the other is not better.

No more 2GB limit. I like I like...

the limit removal is ok, but they really need to improve the compatibilty of the divx codec. my 360 plays more divx files than my ps3, which i'm not happy about because i can't store my own videos on my 360, i can only stream.

Now that is a very nice little firmware update if I do say so myself. It would be better if we saw little ones like this more frequently. NICE!!!!

Sweet, I'm liking the enhancements to the PS3 with these updates.

Now.... if the local rental store will just start stocking blu-ray movies, I'll be set.

Looks like a very solid update.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

this update also has other features no listed btw. And In-game XMB wont be out till July guys so guess features other then that. lol
