Weird decision on Nintendo's part, although doesn't he take that form just after you confront him in Hyrule Castle? That's pretty early in the game. Would be like promoting the adult Link sections of Ocarina, or the Dark World in LTTP, right?

If it were up to me, those moments would be kept out of prerelease marketing as well. I was fortunate to play both of these games without seeing any spoilers, and those moments were, by far, the most suprising parts of each game. My cousin picked all my games for me as he was older and more in tune with what was coming out and what was, you know, good. I did not go into OoT, especially, knowing that Link would turn into an adult or that there was time travel at all. I was also 5, and didn't really understand it until this game.
Suffice to say, I don't think it matters that it happens that early. It's still several dungeons in, and it's a very big spoiler that, while probably obvious given the history of the franchise, was not even remotely alluded to until this promo art, which was only released like a week before the game launched.
