Forums - Sony - Help needed: PS2 as DVD player - good investment?

Im considering buying the first DVD-player in my life. Cost: about 40 Euros.

So I actually thought: why not buy a PS2 instead for 120 Euros. Question: how is the DVD capability of the PS2. User comfort and  picture quality is what interests me.

Also, what about ps3? does it play DVDs as well?

Thanks

It plays DVD fine I just watched a burned DVD yesterday but why would spend that much money if you're just gonna use it to watch DVDs?

I'm sure you can get a DVD player for cheaper than 40 Euros.

And yes you can watch DVDs on a PS3 just not HD-DVDs.

I sold the old model ps2 of mine and got a slim model. I use the slim model regularly and it does a great job.

The ps3 plays DVDs flawlessly. It is a top quality media player, seriously no fanboyism on this. If you have a high def tv, the PS3 plays Blu-ray too.

@cool48: cause i would love to play shadow of colossus as well...

so just buying a DVD player would be an opportunity cost for me.

Does it play burned formats as well?

Buy the DVD player for 40 euros or less.

Yup, as I mentioned before I just watched a burned DVD yesterday.

You're kidding using it as DVD player. You think Sony would allow you to watch burned formats? Nope. If you plan to use it as PS2 as well, you might as well get a $30 DVD player + the PS2. The extra $30 is worth it to avoid burning out your laser on the PS2.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

I've been watching burned DVDs regularly on my fat PS2 for 4 years no problems.

I would only recommend it if you use an sdtv with a not-as-extensive sound system. The functionality was pretty limited back when I tried it with mine, but it has been a while.

I've used my PS2 as a DVD player for years, it works well, picture and sound quality are good. You can use the PS2 controller as the DVD remote, unless you want to buy one separately.

The PS3 of course plays DVD's.
