Forums - Nintendo - Will Yokai Watch be a hit in the West?

I dont think so. Yokai watch became a hit on its second game after good first release. By that time toys/animes/merchandise were happening further driving popularity not just for sequel but original as well (big sales boost for original). I doubt west will get that treatment.

I don't know, but it will be interested to see, Nintendo is pushing this game a lot. Someone has to do a prediction thread. How much will Youkai Watch do in Europe and NA its first week?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

No, probably not. It'll probably have decent sales, and that'll just be about it... : /

I can't see it being that appealing to Western audiences.

Meh, I find it too much Japanese and some of the Yokai are wayyyyy too strange to bee appealing (stickman with an ass as his head I'm looking at you) ...

No, it doesn't have the toys/anime/marketing that it helped make it a hit in japan

Yes it does.

Too japanese for you? Youkai is why.

I think the biggest problem to overcome is demographics. Youkai Watch is followed mostly by kids in Japan. I don't know the percentages, but I think most 3DS owners in the west are older, due to mobile stealing the young market from them (in Japan too, but in Japan handhelds have resisted better). Will that more mature audience want Youkai?

My kid played the download and has not seemed too interested in it. There would have to be a cartoon for them to even have a chance. I know they were supposed to bring it, but it has not caught my kids eyes yet.

I dont blame them.

As a big fan of pokemon/Digimon, Yokai watch is soooo unappealing in its monster/character/ overall design.

I think it could potentially be successful, but I very much doubt it will become a hit. At best I think it could find a yugi-oh level of success, but that may be a stretch. Yokai watch is just so exceedingly Japanese that even with drastic translation it may be hard for the series to be as relatable in the West as compared to something like pokemon that basically features John and Mary Everykid in the land of Anywhere.
