Rockstar is American btw, it's based in New York City...

Is the nationality issue about where games devs and studio are located or where the companies headquaters are based? Are Retro studios' games japanese because the stuidos owned by Nintendo?

There's certainly a lot of Japanese influence at Retro. As for Rockstar, what games do they make? Parodies about crime life in big American cities.

Are spaghetti westerns american then?

No, but it does show that the movie industry is dominated by Americans/American culture, just like the gaming industry. How popular is Yakuza compared to GTA?

I don't think anyones debating the huge significance of american culture.

But if we're saying that because something refernces american culture its american made then you're going down a path that makes attributing any credit to any creator as pointless.

The beatles were infulanced by american music. We don't say they made american music... If we classifyed things from their origional infulancer then we'd say almost all western music would have been made by Bach or some forgotten person long ago. It becomes meaningless.

But Retro Studios said themselves that they're a unique mixture of West and Japanese which is why I responded to you the way I did.

Diversity is one of the most important things that keeps this world alive. Languages, cultures, sensibilities, politics... And, of course, this extends to media. So, no, lack of diversity is never a good thing.

I disagree. Equal opportunity is fair, equal out come isn't, equal outcome can only be achieved by discrimination. That's why i am totally against quota's in buissness, politics, science, media for women and minority races.  because we cease to be a meritocracy. Say for examplr if in buissness there are 10 male applicants for every woman (with the same qualifications) then why is it a problem if all board rooms have a ratio of 10 to 1? To create parity you would need to discriminate against 9 out of every 10 men. Diversity is fine when it happens because of choice and merit, forcing diversity is wrong.

Who cares if so many American games are popular, it is not their fault they are so good at creating a product that the world wants to buy. I don't give a damn wether a game is made in an " under represented" country in africa, south america or if it is made by the familiar companies in the USA, Canada or Japan. All that matters is wether the game is good. Where it was made will never influence my decision to buy or not to

Oh, yeah, of course. I didn't go into the subject further, but I was talking more about equal opportunity. You can't obviously force anyone to watch, play or listen to any media just because it's under represented, as you say. I always though that possitive discrimination is stupid and we'll never achieve anything with these politics. But people must choose whatever they like, and choose in a wide variety of media, without restrictions of any kind.

nstead of american bashing (not you but other posters) I think we should recognise why many american games are popular. It is because games like Halo, Skyrim, Gears of war, Fallout, Dragon age, Forza, Uncharted, The last of us and God of war are so damn good.

Dragon Age is made in Canada, like Mass Effect, KOTOR, Baldur's Gate etc.

Yeah you're right bioware are canadian, I made a mistake. I think it is quite remarkable how many great games come from canada considering it has a relatively small population.

Let just be glad that there are different kind of games for every type of gamer.

America taking over?? Are you blind or something? That's far from the reality.
The best selling hardware and software this year are these.
PlayStation 4- Japanese
The witcher 3- European
Metal gear solid- Japanese
Grand theft auto 5- European
Super smash bros- Japanese

And soon it will be:

Halo 5 - American

CoD - American

Fallout 4 - American

Yes, America dominates this industry, whether you like it or not. Rockstar is American btw, it's based in New York City...

Halo isn't going to dominate, it's just going to sell well on the XboxOne, the console that being massively outsold by the Japanese console.

And GTA was developed by RockStar North which is based in UK, so European.

The PS5 Exists.

As a rule, people who are patriotic are generally weak minded plebs. Very easy to manipulate, due to their lack of ability to think critically.

Either way, the gaming industry hasn't been taken over by the U.S. - the U.S. industry is in a recession/borderline depression, while the Asian and European markets have seen significant growth, and this is despite declines in the Japanese console sector.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I love America, but i also love Sony, my favorite gaming company :).
Japanese games still topnotch as @Airaku and many people in here pointed out, but that's only in term of scores. If you count sales and fanbase, it seem games like StarCraft, League of Legend, COD, Fallout, Skyrim, GTA, The Sims, Dota 2, Minecraft (now owned by Microsoft so can count as "american") and many more are dominating this gen. Especially VALVE Corporation. If im not wrong, Valve is probably the most loved gaming company in the world right now.

This thread feels awfully racist and I think the OP should at least get a warning. Not to mention that Japanese videogames bring a completely different flavour to the market and we should all be glad they exist, as variety is the spice of life indeed.
