Nintendo has fumbled this game. I own the full game, play it by myself (in single player), and it's pretty great. Very fun and at times surprisingly challenging. It's an easy recommendation to anyone looking for a single player experience who also liked Four Swords (or is open to a more arcade-style experience).
It's crazy that Nintendo didn't provide demo that would let you try it out in single player, especially since that's how most people are used to playing Zeldas. To be honest, I feel like playing this game with others would make it a lot more difficult than it really is since you need to coordinate to make your way through the levels. Doing it all single player gives it more of a puzzly feel since you need to juggle your Links, in addition to figuring out how to deal with the environment.
