Forums - Gaming - Konami/Kojima could have been sued by John Carpenter/Canal+ over 'MGS being a ripoff'

- John Carpenter revealed during an interview with the Hollywood Reporter where he talked copyright case against Luc Besson

- John Carpenter said when asked the following:

HR: CanalPlus has some problem with Luc Besson?

Yes! Oh, yes. He has another company. But I think they’re actually doing some business with him, too. [CanalPlus] wanted to also go after the video game Metal Gear Solid, which is kind of a rip-off of Escape From New York, too, but I told them not to do that. I know the director of those games, and he’s a nice guy, or at least he’s nice to me.

Escape from New York trailer:

So yeah, Konami/Kojima were saved the hassle of going through a legal process thanks to Hideo Kojima being a nice guy. lol

Do you think suing Konami for alledge copyright infringement had any basis when comparing Metal Gear Solid to Escape from New York?

Good thing they didn't because the Metal Gear series -or at least the first one- was supposed to pay homage to a lot of action movies from that era, and Escape From New York was one of the obvious inspiration that it wore on it's sleeve. I'd even go as far to say that it was intended to deconstuct them but that's a subject for another day.

Interesting piece of trivia: Solid Snake's alias in MGS2 was Iroquois Pliskin, which was also the name of the main character in Escape From New York

I think MGS series has been pretty upfront about being inspired by old action movies.

In fact, I'd even say the Escape From New York reference in MGS2 was blatant.

That Metal Gear Solid trailer really looks kinda like Escape from New York.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Eye patch is on different side so it should be all gravy.

Yeah, and can't forget "Snake" Plissken part:

But beyond paying homage, MGS is a complete beast of it's own.

Maybe they'd end up losing a legal process though, with how things work sometimes.

Yes, could have been a different story if Konami had someone like Hideki Kamiya instead of Kojima.

Yeah, there wouldn't have been a sue anywhere. Instead we would have Liquid May Cry.
