Forums - Sony - Sony MMO will beat WOW success

Um...wasn't SOE the one that released Everquest? Wasn't that pretty huge? But now everyone says they suck? Hmmmm.....

Huge is a relative term. It was the largest western MMO with a subscriber base of around 550-600k at its peak. That has been their largest success to date and none of their other projects have come even close to those numbers. WoW has around 2 million people in NA alone for comparisons sake. SOE has never been in the same league as WoW. It is like comparing a little league team to the Blue Jays.

John Smedley is hardly an authority on anything. He isn't particularly bright, and he sure as hell isn't trustworthy. Anyone who has played a Sony Online Entertainment game in recent history can tell you that. His job is merely to buy things and run them right into the ground. However before you hit the ground he is good at fishing change out of your pockets.

Plain and simple the man is a disreputable imbecile. Obviously Kaz hasn't gotten a gag on John yet. He has a way of talking himself into trouble and anyone around him by proxy. He obviously implied it if he did not say so directly. The problem is that he is going to get thick headed real fast, and think now that he is on the inside that the PS3 is his personal playground.

That isn't the smartest of things to do or think. You do not want to chase away third party developers, and you definitely don't want to imply to Blizzard that your going to use the parent companies console to bury them. That is the kind of thing that will make them give porting to the 360 some serious thought. No reason to alienate anyone especially one of the biggest third party developers in the world.

SOE was not responsible for Everquest that was Verant. They bought EQ after Velious is my memory serves me correct. I believe they slowly killed eq over time. Soe created EQ2 which I tried hard to get into it just.. wasn't that good of a game imo. Then there is Vanguard. Well the people who had created Verant went on to produce Vanguard and soe bought them out agian. They released Vanguard way too soon, buggy and imo not even finished. As to SWG when they 'overhauled' the game a year or 2 ago they complety alienated many of the userbase. Planetside was a joke...
SOE is the EA of MMOs.

And Verant was owned by which company before Velious? Oh thats right, SOE. Do you know how many people were fired after the take over? Zero. The reason EQ went downhill is because the game sucked, but was the best game on the market for that type of experience. The massive issues with Vanguard are proof of that. The guys who made EQ were a bunch of idiots who put out a product at the perfect time and are now viewed to be some kind of geniuses. Their ideas were terrible, and now look even worse by comparison.

Actually, FOR IT'S TIME, EQ was actually decent.  Heck, if you really look at it, WoW is essentially a highly polished EQ clone in most respects.  I do agree that SOE's managment seems to have NO idea what they are managing, though.

Frankly, I wish more MMO's would take UO as inspiration than WoW, but that's not likely to happen any time soon.

In a recent interview Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley claimed that a Playstation 3 MMO game could surpass World Of Warcraft's success.

"In fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you've already got an online userbase", he said.

Smedley is an idiot. He used to make all of these promises about Star Wars Galaxies, and then those things turned into outright lies.  Gamers were screwed hard with that one if they got into it.

I'd *never* touch a Sony MMO after I saw how they treated gamers with SWG.
