@ Stockstar: that is still ridiculous, no?

I think it's taken somewhat out of context. Let me give you an example of what I think it means. Let's say you want to kill somebody. You hate them so much, that you just want to see them dead. However, you don't kill them, for fear of retribution from the law. It's still bad that you wanted to kill them, no? It's not as bad as actually killing them, but considering the fact that you would've if you had been given the chance, it is a bad thing.

Now, if you just thought of killing somebody, but you didn't actually want to do it, or it was merely a hypothetical thought, like what would happen if so and so wasn't around anymore, then it wouldn't really be a bad thing.

Does that make any sense?

Edit: That Guy had a good explanation as well. I think it's a combination of both of ours, tbh.

That makes sense. I agree with your interpretation. It must be noted, however, that probably not all christians would interpretate that message in the same way.

I typically don't want to be the bad guy in the video game.

That means I am not really into GTA (though I have GTA 2 for my DC). And I don't plan on getting SW: The Force Unleashed bceuase I don't want to be the Sith.

This may have someting to do with my religious beliefs (I was Catholic the first 40 years of my life ... but now I belong to a Methodist church). It may also have something to do with being older and not really liking being the bad guy.

Of course, I do have a Wii and a collection of over 2000 games (for my 35 systems) -- that brings out one of the seven deadly sins sometimes (envy). 8*>

In all seriousness, this is entertainment exercises. And I know a lot of people more religious than I who like shooting foes in Halo 3 -- for what its worth.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Chrizum got totally misunderstood. He was questioning the topic starter's interpretation of that, not stating it himself.

I abhor violence in real life and am not really interested in super violent games.. although if there were one which came out that I would otherwise get then an M rating or something like that wouldn't stop me.

People are of course free to not buy games for themselves or their kids if they object to some of the content, its when they try to impose their beliefs on the rest of us is when there's a problem.

"I bring this up because I know Jesus said that even thinking something is as bad as doing it and doing it when you know it’s wrong puts you in danger of everlasting death. "

To agree with the other posters here, its talking about intentions, not whether or not you make-believe act it out in some way. Christianity isn't the only religion that has this belief. You aren't thinking malicious intentions about video game characters unless you have some mental stability issues.

I went to the Dark Side in KotoR II, am I a bad person? =(

Thanks for all your insight guys!

@ outlawauron, any one who reads their bible, specifically Pauls writings in the new testament will know that in Romans he says God will understand when people sin without knowing it’s sinful but to those who sin knowingly they can expect separation unless they repent. Some where else it says that there is no sacrifice that can save you if you continue to sin once you know it’s a sin and there’s others I’m just no good at actually quoting where they are. So it is a known fact that a Christian cannot repeatedly commit habitual offences if they have so called “repented” of their old life style. They need to repent and leave those habits behind. Accentual slip ups that spring up on you God lovingly understands.

“If you love me, you will obey me” is something Jesus says, and it’s kind of like a wife saying “if you love me you will respect me and treat me well and NOT cheat on me” you have to look at what sin actually is and it’s anything that we do that rebels against God, it can be looked at as cheating on God with our own desire. So it is true that we all fall short, that is a given, but Paul says a life lived through the spirit is pleasing to God, he says we can not please him on our own. And according to Paul a life living in the spirit empowers us to choose not to sin, with out the spirit we have no hope because we would be enslaved to our sinful nature pleasing our own selfish desire.

If it’s so easy to love and honour a wife it shouldn’t be such a far fetched idea to love and honour God, especially when we take on the image and mindset of Christ that comes through living a life in his spirit.

Anything that you know is wrong, or even think could be wrong becomes a sin to you, that is also said in the bible throughout the new testament teachings. So if you think that God may not be happy with something your doing then stop doing it, you will only harm yourself. Some Christians think that drinking alcohol is wrong so there for it would be sinful for then to go against their convictions, some people will only eat certain food, but the bible says you can eat anything and you can drink anything but its over indulgence and drunkenness that are the actual sins that apply to every one.

Burning a flag is considered a federal offence or something is it not? No bodies been hurt or killed but isn’t it the symbolism behind it that is look at and considered an offence. So why would the act of murder or mindless killing on a virtual scale be looked at any different? Anything that goes against Jesus’s example of LOVE is rebellious against God weather its an image, a word, a thought, and act, a simulation, it is all offensive to the love and life that God created and is sin.

So before you didn’t know but know you do

EDIT: title is meant to be GAMING, it was the keyboards fault...

I was just reading a thread started by luinil about church goers and started to wonder if many people selected games based on religious, spiritual or moral beliefs? Or is it just the fun or adventure factor of the games that attracts you?

And the bomb shell… this is for Christians, could you be choosing to sin in games causing you to forfeit your salvation?

Lots of questions! What’s your OPINION!!!
To answer your questions in order: no, yes, no (duh).

Force Unleashed your guy becomes a good guy. Or at least i'm pretty sure he becomes a good guy... or at least has the chance to.

As for religious people and Halo 3. Well there were churches who were luring people to them with Halo 3 parties from what i remember.

Also no... burning an American Flag is still legal as far as I know.  So far as you do it in a safe way.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration

Well America isn’t the only country in the world to have a flag, I never said the American flag, I’m actually not even from America so I didn’t even intend for it to be read as American, if you look here you will see that in a fair few countries it is an offence
