Forums - Gaming - Is their room for mobile dedicated consoles (Handhelds) anymore?

The smartphone wave pretty much eats away sales from handhelds in the West.

Around the Network

The idea of current handheld gaming is pointless FOR ME and I'll tell you why. There use to be a time when handheld gaming and console gaming offered a drastically different experience. Take the GBA for instance. Great games, but they were mostly 16-bit. At the time, home consoles were giving us games like GTA3, MGS2 and Mario Sunshine. The difference between the two was massive and it justified having both devices. Now, the differences between PS Vita/3DS games and PS4/Wii-U games are... what? They're basically the same experience only with less shinny graphics and sound. It's one of the reasons why my jaw dropped when I saw so many people buying BOTH the Wii-U and 3SD SSB. It just blows my mind that people would buy the same game twice.

If dedicated handheld gaming wants to stick around, it's going to need to bring a whole new, unique experience that you can't get on consoles or ios. If it just keeps trying to offer consoles on the go, it's going to die.
